Major construction underway at the new Melton Hospital!

The new Melton Hospital project celebrated an exciting milestone today with the first official ‘sod turn’ on the site.

Western Health Board Chair Professor the Hon. Jill Hennessy, and CEO Professor Russell Harrison were joined onsite by the Victorian Premier, The Hon. Jacinta Allan, Minister for Health Infrastructure, The Hon. Melissa Horne, Minister for Health, The Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas, Minister for Mental Health, Ingrid Stitt and Member of Parliament for Melton, Steve McGhie, to mark the official start of major construction.

Supporting the areas of Caroline Springs, Bacchus Marsh, Rockbank, Melton, and Gisborne, Victoria’s first all-electric hospital will have the capacity to treat 130,000 inpatients annually and see almost 60,000 patients per year in the emergency department.

Due for completion in 2029, the state-of-the-art new hospital will create more than 2,400 jobs during construction and is expected to generate 3,975 direct jobs on-site in its first full year of operations.

We’re excited to be opening the doors to our new Footscray Hospital in February 2026!

With construction nearing completion, we’re undertaking a comprehensive readiness program to ensure we are fully prepared to provide safe, compassionate, and high-quality care from the moment patients arrive.

Thanks to the Victorian Government and the Public Private Partnership led by Plenary Health, this significant investment in the new Footscray Hospital will transform the way care is delivered across the region, giving our growing communities access to modern, purpose-built facilities and services that continue to be close to home. It will also help strengthen our public health system for the future.

We are incredibly excited to begin this next chapter in undertaking final preparations and testing well ahead of the move, and we are deeply grateful to our staff, consumers, volunteers, partners and community for their continued support and trust. Western Health is committed to ensuring a safe, seamless transition into this world-class hospital while continuing to provide the exceptional care our patients and community expect.

Some key activities in getting ready:
🔷 Over 4,500 staff members will complete dedicated training tailored to the new hospital’s advanced features and technologies.
🔷 Around 200 specialised staff will participate in 2635 clinical simulation exercises to test how critical care processes operate in the new hospital setting.
🔷 A dedicated team of 10 pharmacists will carry out more than 1,200 hours of preparation to order, install, and stock medication in the central pharmacy.
🔷Our supply and logistics teams will invest more than 4,000 hours in stocking 180 clinical store rooms with the consumables and medical supplies needed to support timely care delivery.
🔷Over 400 patient care spaces — from consulting rooms to intensive care areas — will be carefully stocked and prepared to create safe, welcoming, and well-equipped environments for every patient, every time.
🔷 Up to 180 patients will be transferred to the new hospital in a thoughtfully planned and safely executed one-day move, supported by thousands of Western Health staff working together to ensure patients receive uninterrupted, high-quality care throughout the transition.
🔷 Nearly 80 hospital services will move into the new facility in alignment with the patient transfer.
🔷 More than 4,000 items of clinical and operational equipment will be relocated in a coordinated, step-by-step approach designed to minimise disruption to patient services and ensure each department is set up to deliver care without delay.
🔷Support and administrative teams will also move, with over 1,200 boxes of equipment and resources to be carefully packed, transported, and set up across their new spaces.

✨ This National Diabetes Week, meet Dr Lit Kim. She is one of our incredible paediatric diabetes experts who is sharing an important message. 💙

"Most parents don’t realise how subtle the early signs of diabetes can be. That’s why I’m passionate about awareness, recognising just four simple symptoms can lead to life-changing care," Dr Lit Kim said.

⚠️ The symptoms might seem small, but they could be signs of undiagnosed diabetes.

Dr Lit Kim is part of Western Health's Paediatric Diabetes Service who helps our younger patients with the management of both Type 1 and Type 2. The team consists of Paediatric Endocrinologists, a Diabetes Nurse Educator, a Dietitian and a Social Worker. They provide both inpatient and outpatient diabetes education and self-management skills to help, as well as a Paediatric Diabetes Outpatient Clinic.

💡 With the right care and knowledge, young people can keep doing what they love and feel confident every step of the way.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, we gathered at Melton Health Hub yesterday to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our staff, executives, consumers, community and Board Member the Hon Monica Gould came together for a flag raising ceremony and to connect as a community.

It was a great opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation and reflect upon First Nation’s leadership across generations, especially within our community.

With one of the fastest growing Aboriginal populations in Victoria calling Melton home, Melton Health Hub provided a fitting location for our celebrations this year.

We are proud to be partnering with our First Nations community to improve barriers to accessing health care.

👩‍🍳 Bringing comfort food from our community to the hospital tray! 🍲

Following engagement with our consumers, Western Health is working towards integrating culturally diverse meals into our already extensive hospital menu.

🧡 We listened to what our patients told us, they wanted meals that reflected their culture, their stories, and what makes them feel good.

As part of this important step forward, our dietitians recently joined members of the Vietnamese community and chefs from our Central Production Kitchen, the team responsible for the meals served across Western Health hospitals, to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Together, they explored the art of making traditional congee, with expert community members sharing their own recipes and techniques. Our chefs worked side by side with our community and gained valuable insights into the ingredients and methods behind this much-loved comfort dish.

🗣️ “It’s healing,” said Cuc, one of our community advisors. “When the food is familiar, patients feel happier and heal better.”

This is what community-led care looks like, and we’re working towards making these recipes part of the everyday hospital menu.

✨This is a powerful example of how engaging with lived experience leads to better outcomes and more inclusive care.

💖 When Western Health nurse Maxwell East and his wife Jacky discovered they were expecting triplets in late 2023, few could have predicted the roller coaster that was to follow.

Jacky was diagnosed with breast cancer six weeks after the birth of Bobbie, Stevie and Rosie. Just a few months after that, Jacky’s twin sister, Julie, also received the same devastating diagnosis.

But, as Jo Hall from 9 News Melbourne discovered, the East family was not to be underestimated.

Jacky and Maxwell – now the parents of six – have spent the past year performing an incredible juggle. As well as raising five girls under five, plus a teenage son, Jacky has endured an intense series of cancer treatments at Sunshine Hospital, including a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

In the meantime, clinical nurse specialist Maxwell has continued caring for his own patients in the cardiac catheterisation lab.

Social worker Fiona Nguyen, who has been an important part of the extensive Western Health team supporting the East family, said she was inspired by their approach.

“Jacky is warm, resilient and full of love, remaining positive despite juggling treatment and parenting six children with Max,” Fiona said.

Jacky has shared her story for one important reason – to raise awareness about breast cancer, and to encourage women to be vigilant about potential symptoms.

“Please check your breasts for lumps,” Jacky said.

“Don’t ever think this can’t happen to you. As my sister Julie and I now know, it can happen to anyone.

“If you have symptoms and if you are not happy with the answers you are getting, or if it is down-played, seek a second opinion. It doesn’t hurt to make sure.” 💗

🎉 Big congratulations to Joan Kirner Women and Children’s (JKWC) at Sunshine Hospital for retaining its prestigious Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation.

For the past 25 years Sunshine Hospital has held the BFHI accreditation, recognising our world-class breastfeeding support.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF accreditation program aims to create an environment where breastfeeding is protected, promoted and supported.

It’s designed to help families receive unbiased information, appropriate support and factual advice before, during and after the birth of their baby. 💜💜

Thank you to our lactation team, as well as our midwives, nurses and medical teams, who support women and birthing people to ensure babies can have the best start to life. 🙏
