This National Reconciliation Week we’re raising our voice to improve health outcomes for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by diabetes and those at risk.

While we recognise and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history we know that, sadly, diabetes is a leading contributor to the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are more than three times as likely to have and nearly five times more likely to be hospitalised with diabetes-related complications.

We’re committed to changing these numbers, changing the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with diabetes, and changing the future for generations to come.

MND relay was awesome on Saturday, team smashed it, ran 58.4km with a group of friend from CSIRO and my gorgeous daughter. We raised $785 for Motor neurone disease vic, a not-for-profit organisation supporting people with MND.

FOOD & MOOD IN THE MEDIA

In a recent New York Times article, Food and Mood Centre researchers Dr Melissa Lane and Dr Wolf Marx discuss the role of ultra-processed foods in mental health.

Spoiler alert: even after accounting for factors that we know are linked to all sorts of poor health outcomes like lower income and physical activity, higher consumption of ultra-processed food is associated with worse brain and mental health.

But we still don’t know how or why.

HOW TO LIMIT ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS

Ultra-processed foods can be tricky to pick, but briefly, they usually come in packages and contain ingredients that you wouldn’t typically use in home-cooking.

Many are high in sugar, saturated fat, salt and kilojoules, while being low in protein, fibre and essential vitamins and minerals.

For these reasons, looking at the ingredients list on packages can be useful. Here are some simple tips to help reduce your intake of ultra-processed foods:

🔹Choose wholefoods by shopping in the vegetable, fruit, meat and dairy sections rather than the middle aisles of the supermarket where most ultra-processed foods are located.

🔹Look for foods that have the fewest ingredients (e.g. 5 or less).

🔹Check that you understand everything that is in the food and whether it’s something you’d find in your own kitchen.

P**p jokes aren’t my favorite jokes. But they’re a solid number two.
As a Nutritionist I spend a lot of time talking about Poo. Today I am super excited to share my poo with you! 💩💩 not literally..

I received my gut microbiome report the other day and it's incredibly detailed. Here is a few pages of the 66 page report.

Your gut bacteria can produce thousands of different substances, called metabolites, when they use different fuel sources for energy. These metabolites can interact with our immune, metabolic and nervous systems to influence our health.

Some of these metabolites promote good health while others promote poor health. An example is the production of serotonin in the gut, influencing learning, memory, happiness as well as regulating body temperature, sleep, sexual behavior and hunger.

Definitely recommend a poo study to see how healthy your guts are.

Eating the right types & amounts of fats is key for numerous reasons!

are needed for vital processes such as brain, eye and heart function, growth and development. Plus, essential fats (e.g., omega-3 & 6) can't be produced by the body, so we need to get them from our food.

Finally putting an end to "but it's still ok" debate that divides most households.

Food waste reduction goals✅️.
Well done Sainsburys removing Best Before date on thousands of products to replace with no date reduces waste.
We create 7.6 million tonnes of food waste in Australia per year. While other nations are experiencing famine.
Needless to say Use by date need to stay.

UK supermarket chains have dropped the use of “best before” date labels to reduce the amount of food being thrown out when it’s still perfectly edible. It’s just as big a problem in Australia.
