‘There are many emotions involved [after surviving a heart event], but ambiguous loss usually plays a role in the way patients feel about the situation moving forward. They’ve lost something very precious to them, which is believing that they’re strong enough to live and that their body will do what they need it to do, when they need it to. Suddenly, that’s gone. They will never get it back.
It’s an innocence that we all have to varying degrees. We know we’re going to die one day, but not today. There’s a grieving process in that!’
I know this firsthand. My own family has lived through it, and it’s something I spoke about in In A Heartbeat — a book that isn’t just about surviving a heart event, but about what comes after. The emotional toll. The grief. The adjustment. The resilience. It’s filled with real, raw experiences from survivors, their loved ones and professionals who support them.
📖 Inside, you’ll find:
✨ An interview with me, where I talk about the emotional weight of a heart event, both as a professional and as someone who’s lived it.
✨ The opening account of the book, where the counsellor in the story? That’s me! Because even those of us trained to support others aren’t immune to the unexpected.
✨ A dedicated resource section with contacts (including ours!) for those needing support.
A huge thank you to for bringing this book to life and giving space to these important stories ❤️💙
🐈 And look who’s giving this book a thorough read? It’s Pippin our fluffiest book reviewer/literary critic!! Even Pippin approves and 5 paws up for In A Heartbeat 🐾

What does “recovery” truly mean in the context of mental health? The answer, it turns out, is far more complex than simply the absence of symptoms.
Recovery in mental health is not a simple, one-size-fits-all concept. It encompasses a spectrum of individual experiences that go beyond just reducing symptoms to include overall well-being. While diagnostic categories offer a way to understand mental illness, they often fall short in capturing the subtle nuances of individual experiences and can inadvertently make it harder for people to get the crucial support they need.
This highlights the need for a more holistic approach to care and recovery—one that acknowledges the complex continuum of mental health and the many interconnected factors influencing it.
✅ Key Takeaways:
• Mental health & illness exist on overlapping spectrums.
• Categorical diagnosis (like the DSM-5) is helpful but limited.
• The dimensional approach takes a more well-rounded view of mental health.
• The dimensional approach allows for preventative care and support.
• Combining both approaches can be even better.
• Assessment tools in Australia might not always give the full picture.
• Everyone has a role to play in the dimensional approach.
• Even subjective experiences can be measured.

At Redefine Life, we are deeply commited to implementing the Dimensional Approach — a transformative framework for holistic care, wellness and recovery in mental health. Originally inspired by the work of Whitley and Drake (2010), this approach has been thoughtfully extended and implemented by our founder and CEO, Nat Wild. This framework is designed to address the interconnected dimensions of recovery: categorical, physical, functional, existential and social.
Nat’s vision for this approach is to empower individuals to engage with the helpers within the dimensions most relevant to their unique lives, cultures and experiences, with counsellors providing guidance every step of the way. By implementing this dimensional model, we foster sustainable recovery and resilience, addressing challenges while supporting long-term well-being. This approach positions mental health care as equally vital as physical health care, redefining recovery for a more integrated future.
You can read more about this impactful work in the peer-reviewed article featured in the ACA Magazine, co-authored by Nat Wild and Registered Counsellor, Chantelle Gagachis.

✨ Let’s talk boundaries ✨
The holiday season can bring so much joy — but it can also come with moments that test our personal boundaries in SO MANY ways: family gatherings, social expectations, work pressures, gifting obligations and even how we navigate our relationship with our own bodies.
But the truth is: you can’t set boundaries if you don’t know where your line is 🙅♂️💡 Boundaries aren’t about shutting people out or creating walls, they’re about understanding what feels right for you and honouring your own needs, values and comfort. They shouldn’t be considered selfish or harsh; they’re an act of self-respect and a way to protect your peace while fostering healthier, more authentic connections with others.
So, let’s take a moment to pause and reflect: What are your non-negotiables? Where do you feel stretched too thin? What behaviours, conversations, or expectations make you feel uncomfortable or drained?
Getting curious about your boundaries means listening to your gut, recognising what feels supportive versus what feels overwhelming, and giving yourself permission to say “no” when needed. It’s about learning to draw the lines that allow you to show up as your best self — for YOU and for those around you. So let’s get curious and clear about your boundaries with these prompts! 👆🏻👆🏻
Remember, this isn’t just for the holidays. This is about living intentionally all year round. Take some time to reflect. Journal it out. Talk it over with someone you trust. Your boundaries are yours to define, and they’re worth protecting.
You don’t have to explain yourself or justify your boundaries. The people who respect you will respect your boundaries 💙
What’s one area where you’re setting (or thinking about setting) clearer boundaries? Let’s start a conversation below 👇

If you’re dreading the holidays because they typically come with ~family drama~ 🙄 it might be time to tap into the magic of setting boundaries. You’ve probably scrolled past a post or two on Insta or TikTok about the importance of this powerful thing called a “BOUNDARY”, but what does it actually mean?
Turns out, setting boundaries is really just telling someone what you need in order to feel safe and comfortable in a relationship with them. Sounds pretty simple and straightforward, right?
Except…it’s not. Especially when it comes to family.
Since you’ve gone your whole life interacting with your family in a certain way, it can be hard to introduce a whole new mode of interacting (aka a boundary) because it feels like you’re messing with the status quo. If you’re not used to expressing your needs with your parents or siblings or whomever, it’s easy to feel guilty about doing that now. You might think it’s just easier to go along with how your family typically operates to avoid a potential conflict. But, that’s what experts call self-abandoning (yikes), aka ignoring. your. own. boundaries. and it’s not ideal. This can also lead to stress, resentment and a serious case of the holiday blues.
But the thing is: boundaries aren’t about creating conflict or calling people out. They’re about protecting you and, surprisingly, strengthening the good parts of your relationships. It’s not about shutting people out—it’s about showing up in a way that feels true to yourself.
So, how do you actually start setting boundaries with your family? Well, it takes practice, but it’s totally possible! Setting boundaries might feel awkward at first, but trust us, it’s all worth it in the end. This holiday season, let’s prioritise mental health, ditch the drama and protect our peace ✌🏻

Can you guys believe it? We’re already halfway through December, and somehow, 2024 is almost over! This time of year always seems to move so fast, but we still have these last few precious weeks. Instead of rushing through them, let’s pause for a moment to reflect — not just on how far we’ve come, but on how we want to make them count in a way that feels good to US.
This is your reminder to slow down and take a deep breath. Life gets so busy, and we’re so often caught up in everything and everyone else that we forget to ask ourselves, “What do I need right now?”So, for these last few days of 2024, let’s shift the focus. Let’s give ourselves permission to put us first.
Take the last remaining days of 2024 to lean into what resonates most with us — to prioritise our peace, protect our energy, and do the things that make us feel good, aligned and whole.
For the rest of this year and into the next, we’re choosing us. So, here’s to meeting ourselves where we’re at, celebrating how far we’ve come and creating space for what’s still ahead. Let’s finish this year with intention, kindness and gratitude, for ourselves and for the journey that brought us here.
Drop a 🩵 if you’re claiming any of these intentions for the rest of this year! And in the comments👇🏻, share something you’re affirming for yourself as we step into 2025. We’d love to hear what’s on your heart!!

The holiday season can bring joy, but it can also bring up stress, overwhelm and the pressure to be “on” all the time. But what if this year, you created a holiday routine that ACTUALLY worked for you? It’s about showing up for yourself in ways that prioritise your well-being, without the guilt.
This season, try focusing on what feels nourishing and grounding, instead of falling into the trap of doing it all. Whether it’s setting clearer boundaries, honouring your need for rest or finding quiet moments to reflect, the goal is to feel connected and peaceful — not burnt out.
You deserve a holiday that doesn’t drain your energy but fills you up, so make time for self-care, lean on your support system, and remember that it’s okay to say no when you need to.
The holidays don’t have to be a race to the finish line. Let this season be about creating small, meaningful moments that help you stay grounded and connected to yourself.
Share this with a friend who could use this reminder this holiday season! You’ve got this 🎄✨❤️
