Where Do Surgeons Train? All Over the World. 🌍
While the standard of Orthopaedic training in Victoria is exceptional many junior surgeons elect to spend further time gaining experience in particular areas often working with world experts or in renowned centres to further develop their skills and knowledge.These rotations are called fellowships and all of the MHK team completed international fellowships. These are our fellowships and what we have learnt from our time there.
Here’s a glimpse into where we’ve trained and what we’ve learned
📍 Leuven, Belgium – with Prof Johan Bellemans
Prof Bellemans is a world-renowned knee surgeon and former Olympic team physician. He co-designed the Journey I & II knee implants, helped define the Anterolateral ligament, and introduced new thinking in knee alignment (like the CPAK classification). Under his guidance, Mr van Bavel refined his knee replacement technique and expanded his experience in ACL reconstruction and knee arthroscopy. 🎥 Watch more on the ALL
📍 Exeter, UK – The Exeter Hip Team
Home of the most widely used hip implant in Australia — known for its outstanding long-term results. The Exeter hiphas been a gold standard globally for decades. Mr van Bavel now co-leads the Australian Exeter Hip Replacement Workshops, helping teach the technique to the next generation of surgeons. 🔗 Read more
📍 Bristol, UK – The AVON Orthopaedic Centre
Training with Mr Jonathan Eldridge, Mr van Bavel developed deep expertise in patellofemoral instability, knee replacements, and revision surgery. This centre is recognised for its innovation in managing complex knee conditions. 🔗 Learn more
📍 Bristol, UK – with Mr Jonathan Webb
From rugby legend to elite knee surgeon, Mr Webb is known for treating high-performance athletes. Mr van Bavel gained insight into arthroscopic knee surgery and the rehabilitation of elite-level sports injuries.
📍 Toronto, Canada – Mt Sinai Hospital
A major referral centre for complex revision hip and knee surgery. Mr van Bavel spent 6 months here managing some of the most challenging revision cases in North America.
🎓 Giving Back
Now a fellowship supervisor himself, Mr van Bavel runs a Robotics & Arthroplasty Fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital and co-supervises a second fellowship at Epworth. These roles attract applicants from around the world.
