Does Movement Matter in Clinical Practice?
There are a lot of mythologies and misconceptions out there, like ...
Can't go wrong getting strong.
Movement starts from the core.
Control is the goal.
It doesn't matter how you move.
You must move in this certain specific way or there will be hell to pay....
It goes on and on....
It can be confusing and tempting to diminish the conundrum by saying it doesn't really matter.
So here's the short version:
Patients don't belong in boxes. Posture and movement are the sum of multiple systems, an extraordinary web of interconnections that gives you huge scope and possibilities as a clinician. And AI can't do what you can.
Clinical movement expertise is not about prescribing exercises or using generalised testing protocols.
It is not the same as Pilates, yoga or S and C, although all of those activities have value.
It is:
The discerning use of movement in your analysis to help "get to the why" of a presentation in a way that is relevant and engaging to the patient.
Increasing specificity by exposing the web of potential contributing factors in the patient's presentation. These may be biomechanical, neuromuscular, sensory, emotional, perceptual, belief driven and more.
Identifying the most likely entry point/system on this web to enable change, instead of being overwhelmed and defaulting to "an exercise programme".
Being sufficiently agile to switch systems when the patient is struggling to experience change .
Helping patients to develop confidence and curiosity, in place of fear and helplessness.
And so much more.
It is as much about how you dialogue, question, invite, coach and modulate the experience as it is about the choice of movement, so it is not just about tests and exercises. It is about moving the brain.
It seems complex, but it doesn't have to be complicated.
I'm going to host a free open session to talk movement this coming week for those of you who are movement curious, movement confused, or who share my passion for this astoundingly beautiful, intensely human expression of who and how we are.
Join me for a frank chat and an opportunity to ask me your burning questions about movement's role in your clinical practice.
I'll share with you a variety of patient application examples to illustrate how to recognise this multisystem web in your own patients, and highlight some of the possibilities
