A lovely client has relocated to rural Victoria and we had a final session this week in the Ashwood clinic. He arrived with this award for me and I was so touched. I am also wrapped that the family have finally found a new local Speech Pathologist after a long wait and extensive search. What most clients do not realise is that years after they are discharged or move on, I still do think about their journey and wonder how they are getting on in life.

Why the Victorian Government continues to allow schools to decide their own approaches to teaching literacy and to not adopt the evidence based approaches that are backed by science baffles me.

Dr.Pamela Snow is a Speech Pathologist and Psychologist and is widely regarded as a leading expert in the field of literacy, amongst other things.

In 2017, Pamela was a member of the National Year 1 Literacy and Numeracy Panel, convened by the then Federal Minister for Education, the Hon. Simon Birmingham.

In 2020, Pamela established, with her colleague, Associate Professor Tanya Serry, the Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab in the School of Education at La Trobe University. The SOLAR Lab is a platform for research, teaching, advocacy and postgraduate supervision on a wide range of topics pertaining to developmental language and the transition to reading, writing and spelling in the school years.

Victorian schools are still being left to decide their own literacy teaching strategy, while NSW, South Australia and Queensland are moving ahead with phonics.

Attended a symposium at the RCH: Centre for Excellence in Child Speech Disorders yesterday. Wow there was some true brain power in that room! It was inspiring to hear about the advances of genetic medicine and how genome sequencing is growing and being used to inform diagnosis and treatment planning and options. As Dr. David Amor said, “Genetics is the future of our working lives” There was a focus on Childhood Apraxia of Speech ( CAS) research and also how genetics and genomics can assist and inform clinical Speech Pathology practice. A unique and wonderful way to end the day was with a funny and touching performance from comedian There’s always so much to learn 🧠👂.
