2. The Coordination of Qi, Blood, and the Organs
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Qi and blood are closely interrelated and essential to organ function. Qi is said to command blood, while blood nourishes Qi. Qi drives the circulation of blood, and blood sustains Qi. When they flow smoothly, the organs are well-nourished, maintaining internal balance and promoting health. But if either is deficient or stagnant, organ functions decline, leading to fatigue, illness, or weakened immunity.
For instance, the liver regulates the smooth flow of Qi. If liver Qi stagnates, blood flow may be blocked, leading to symptoms like irritability, headaches, or digestive issues. The spleen and stomach transform food into Qi and blood. When spleen Qi is weak, symptoms such as tiredness, poor appetite, or frequent colds may arise due to poor Qi and blood production. The lungs govern Qi and are vital to respiration and defense against illness. Lung Qi deficiency can result in shortness of breath, low energy, or susceptibility to colds and flu.
The kidneys store essence (Jing), which is fundamental to vitality. Insufficient kidney Qi may cause lower back pain, knee weakness, tinnitus, or cold intolerance—often observed in aging individuals or those with chronic fatigue.
Maintaining harmony between Qi, blood, and organ function is the foundation of strong health and disease prevention in TCM.
Next, we will explore how physical movement supports Qi regulation and introduce the 'Ba Duan Jin' (Eight Brocades) practice.
