Reading a book with your child is wonderful — but talking about the story afterwards is where the magic really happens. 📖

When we ask children to retell the story or answer questions about what happened, we’re helping them develop important language skills such as:
📚 understanding story structure (beginning, middle, end)
📚 learning new vocabulary
📚 organising their thoughts and ideas
📚 practising sequencing and recall
📚 Analysing the pictures if they can’t remember

These narrative skills are closely linked to later reading comprehension, writing and classroom learning.

Next time you finish a book, try asking:
• “What happened first?”
• “What was the problem in the story?”
• “How did it end?”
• “What was your favourite part?”

A simple conversation about a story can build big language skills for school and beyond. 🤓

W-sitting might look comfortable, but it’s not doing little bodies any favours.

When kids sit in a “W” position, they rely on the stability of their joints instead of using their core muscles. Over time this can impact core strength, balance, and postural control. It also places extra stress on the hips, knees, and ankles, which can affect how these joints develop.

Encouraging alternative sitting positions like cross-legged, side sitting, kneeling or long sitting helps children build the strength and stability they need for play, learning, and everyday movement.

Little posture habits can make a big difference.

⏰ Have you ever thought about seeing time? ⏰

Digital vs Analogue: why clocks matter for time management

A digital clock tells you what time it is.
An analogue clock shows you how time is moving.

🟢 Analogue clocks make time visible — you can see chunks passing, how long is left, and how close you are to the end. This supports planning, transitions, and emotional regulation (especially for kids who struggle with abstract concepts).

🔵 Digital clocks are great for precision, but time can feel invisible — it just jumps from one number to the next.

✨ Tip:
Use analogue clocks (or visual timers) when teaching routines, waiting, transitions, or “5 minutes left” or when trying to teach time management skills.

Seeing time = understanding time 💛

✨ School’s started — and it’s not too late to get clarity ✨

The first weeks of school often shine a light on how your child is really going — with learning, communication, friendships and confidence 📚💛
Early-term assessments can make a big difference in setting the year and supports up well.

At Now We’re Talking, our team can assess:
🗣️ Receptive & Expressive LanguageHow your child understands and uses language — following instructions, building sentences, vocabulary, grammar and storytelling. This helps guide effective classroom and learning strategies.

🔤 Literacy & School ReadinessFoundations for reading and spelling, phonological awareness, pencil grip, letter formation and early academic skills — whether your child is in Prep or moving into a new year level.

👅 Articulation & Childhood Apraxia of SpeechHow clearly your child produces sounds and words, whether speech patterns are age-appropriate, and whether motor-planning difficulties may be impacting clarity.

💬 Social CommunicationConversation skills, play, emotional understanding, perspective-taking and how your child connects with peers and adults at school.

If you’ve been wondering “should we look into this?” — this is your sign 🤍
Reach out to our admin team to chat about assessment or therapy options.

Let’s support your child to feel calm, confident and capable this school year ✨
