MENOPAUSE MAKEOVER.....take back control of your health and fitness in midlife.

Menopause isn’t just about hot flushes. There are so many changes occurring throughout your body as you enter peri-menopause and these may continue into post-menopause if you don’t learn how to adapt to your new hormonal environment.

Menopause is also the gateway to our biological ageing, so many of our main organs are reducing in size and function too. For example, did you know that the volume of the liver can reduce up to 40% during menopause?

It’s therefore no wonder that women feel so out of sorts and completely robbed of confidence, energy and health when they reach midlife.

So what should you do?????????????

Menopause symptoms are caused by a hormonal imbalance during the ages of 40 and 50. No two women are the same, and they will experience menopause symptoms during the stages of menopause at different times and with different intensity.

Self-care is the practice of actions that preserve or improve one’s own health. This relates to our mental, emotional, and physical health. Women are often known to take care of others before themselves which is why when it arrives, women are unprepared to give themselves proper self-care.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU 2023🍾🍾

Between the lead-up to Christmas, Christmas Day and New Year's celebrations, that five to six-week span has been filled with lots of irresistible food.

If you didn't quite stick to your healthy eating regimen with all the indulgent foods available this holiday season don't be down on yourself, I didn't either! It's normal to enjoy the holidays, but, it's important to get back on track as soon as the holidays are over.

For women over 40 and 50, maintaining a healthy weight and losing excess body fat can become harder as the years go by. A combination of changing metabolism, body composition and hormones makes it challenging.

Have you noticed after Christmas, at the start of the New Year the onslaught of ads for weight loss powders, potions, lotions and contraptions promising you a new body?

With age comes wisdom and we know the same weight loss strategies that worked in our 20s and 30s don't seem to work.

Somehow another year has rolled by – which means it is party season again!

Weight gain over the festive season is all too common and tends to stick around until the following year where it accumulates further.

But having a healthy Christmas doesn’t have to mean forgoing all of the lovely treats that we associate with this time of year. Indulgence, like anything, doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

THE ONE-TWO PUNCH TO MENOPAUSE

Like many women, I spent years trying to find the perfect weight loss program. Yo-yo dieting from one program to the next. Nothing I tried was sustainable and the results from those programs were short-lived.

For decades, I played a game with myself, ultimately wasting a lot of time, putting my health at risk, doing hours of cardio and restricting my diet.

At 55 I now understand the role of strength training in boosting metabolism and reducing overall body fat. In fact, there is a long list of benefits to lifting weights (including heavyweights) for women over 40 when it comes to fat loss and easing menopause symptoms.

If you are over 40 or over 50 like me and facing peri-menopause or menopause, weight lifting can be an excellent exercise for staving off the weight gain and loss of muscle mass that often come with menopause. It's the cornerstone of my fitness program and it's what keeps me feeling and looking better than I did in my 20s and 30s.

What if I told you that instead of focusing on “WEIGHT LOSS”, you should be thinking about these benefits of lifting weights: leaning up and reducing overall fat from the body, building nicely-defined muscles that add definition to your curves, improving your posture and gaining a tighter, firmer look and feel to your muscles? Sounds pretty good.

Fat loss is the benefit I’m most interested in, and it’s connected to the boost in metabolism that I get when I lift weights. Although it’s a modest boost, every bit of muscle I carry around is burning fat at a faster rate than my fat, so my muscles are working overtime

It is never too late to start. The key is to start slowly.
