You’ve probably heard of histamine in the context of hayfever…
But what if your breakouts, rashes, and that afternoon headache or post-meal bloating were all linked to the same thing?

Histamine isn’t just about allergies, it’s a chemical your body naturally produces. But when it builds up faster than your body can clear it, things can start to feel off in ways you might not expect.

Common signs of histamine overload:

🩷 Skin-related
• Rashes, hives, or eczema that worsen in spring
• Flushing after wine, chocolate, or spicy food
• Itchy skin without a clear cause

🧠 Nervous system + brain
• Anxiety or restlessness
• Headaches or migraines (especially around your cycle)
• Feeling wired but tired

🍽 Digestive system
• Bloating or reflux (especially after fermented foods)
• Loose stools or urgency
• Feeling full quickly

👃 Respiratory & sinuses
• Hayfever-like symptoms even without a cold
• Nasal congestion that comes and goes
• Post-nasal drip or sneezing fits

Histamine issues aren’t always obvious but they are common.
Especially in women with underlying gut issues, hormone changes, or high stress levels.

If these symptoms feel familiar, you don’t have to piece it together alone.

Do your skin flares seem random or triggered by things like wine, chocolate, strawberries, or even spring pollen? 🍷🍓🐝

It might not just be sensitivity.

It could be histamine overload and your skin is bearing the brunt of it.
Histamine is a natural compound your body makes.

It helps with digestion, immune function and responses to allergens.

But when histamine builds up faster than your body can clear it, you may start to notice symptoms like:

🔺 Itchy, reactive skin
🔺 Hives or rashes that come and go
🔺 Facial flushing or eczema that flares after certain foods or seasons
🔺 Feeling puffy or inflamed for no clear reason

So why does this happen?
➡️ Gut health is key. Certain bacteria help break down histamine. If your gut is imbalanced (dysbiosis), you might be missing that critical function.
➡️ Liver detox & elimination matter. If your liver or bowels are sluggish, histamine can linger longer in your system and trigger inflammation.
➡️ Stress also increases histamine release so if you’re feeling overwhelmed, your flares might be too.

💛 You’re not “overreacting” your body is just overwhelmed.
If this sounds like your skin, I’d love to help you get clear on what’s actually going on.

If every spring your eczema flares, rashes reappear, or your skin feels red and reactive, your body is asking for deeper support.

And while skincare can help soothe the surface, lasting relief starts within.

Here are 3 internal foundations to focus on this season 👇

✅ 1. Prioritise daily elimination
Your skin is one of your detox organs so if your bowels aren’t moving daily, that waste has to go somewhere. Often, it tries to come out through the skin.
👉 Aim for at least one well-formed bowel movement each day to keep histamine, old hormones, and inflammatory waste moving out of the body.

🍏 2. Eat more quercetin-rich foods
Quercetin is a natural compound that helps stabilise mast cells (the ones that release histamine).
Try adding:
• Green tea
• Apples (with the skin)
• Red onion
• Chamomile tea
These can help reduce that histamine “spike” that often flares skin in spring.

🍽 3. Keep your blood sugar steady
Spikes and crashes in blood glucose can drive inflammation and inflammation can drive skin reactivity.

👉 Focus on eating balanced meals every 3-4 hours, with protein, fat and fibre to help your body (and skin) feel safe.

💛 You don’t have to overhaul everything, start with one change that feels doable.

And if you’d like personalised support this spring, book a 1:1 consult and let’s get to the root of it together 🌿

Your skin’s flaring… but the sun’s out, the days feel lighter, shouldn’t it be getting better?

If this time of year brings on itchy patches, hives, or eczema flares, you’re not alone and it’s not all in your head (or your skincare).

Spring is beautiful… but for sensitive skin? It can be a bit of a storm.

🌿 Here’s what’s actually going on inside your body:

🌼 More allergens = more histamine
Pollen, grasses, mould spores are all more abundant in spring. These can trigger histamine release, which doesn't just cause sneezing or watery eyes, it can show up as itching, redness, rashes, and flares on the skin too.

🧬 Your immune system is on high alert
If your gut lining is compromised or your detox pathways are sluggish (especially liver or bowel function), your body may struggle to break down and clear excess histamine leading to a kind of internal traffic jam.

🔥 Inflammation builds up beneath the surface
Even if you’re eating well and doing “all the right things,” underlying gut imbalances, blood sugar dysregulation, or long-term stress can keep your inflammation high and your skin in a reactive state.

The result? Your skin flares faster and louder, especially when spring adds fuel to the fire.

This doesn’t mean your skin is overreacting, it means it’s communicating. Loudly.

In the next post, I’ll share gentle, internal strategies to help your body feel safer (so your skin can too) 🌿

Ever notice your skin flares up right before your period?

This isn’t random - it’s your hormones shifting.

In the lead-up to your bleed, progesterone drops, and oestrogen becomes more dominant. This shift increases oil production, slows down skin healing, and drives inflammation - the perfect storm for breakouts.

You might also notice more congestion, sensitivity, or flare-ups of conditions like eczema or perioral dermatitis during this time.

In clinic, I support clients to work with their cycle - not against it.
That means understanding your patterns and giving your body what it needs during each phase.

Some of the strategies we use include:
🌿 Supporting progesterone in the luteal phase
🥦 Balancing blood sugar to keep inflammation down
🧘‍♀️ Calming the nervous system to reduce hormonal stress responses
💊 Targeted nutrients like zinc and B6 to support skin and hormone health

When you understand the “why” behind your breakouts, you can take steps to prevent them - not just treat them after they appear.

When clients come to me with hormonal symptoms - breakouts, fatigue, mood swings, irregular cycles - they often feel like they need to do MORE to fix it.

But true hormone support isn’t about cramming your schedule with green smoothies, 6am workouts, and a dozen new supplements.
It’s about doing LESS — and doing it more intentionally.

Here are a few gentle shifts I often recommend in clinic:

🕒 Swap fasting or skipping breakfast → for a protein-rich meal within 30–60 minutes of waking
☕ Swap 2+ coffees on an empty stomach → for one mindful cup after food
🛏️ Swap scrolling before bed → for a wind-down ritual (dim lights, herbal tea, magnesium)
📆 Swap overbooking your week → for intentional rest days, especially pre-period
💧 Swap long gaps between meals → for regular eating to balance blood sugar

These might sound simple — but they send a powerful message to your body:
You’re safe. You’re nourished. You can relax.

And that’s when your hormones start to regulate naturally.

Just because I’m a naturopath doesn’t mean I’ve never had health issues.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

My own journey with painful periods, post-pill acne, and eventually a diagnosis of adenomyosis is what led me to this work in the first place.

For years, I was dismissed by GPs and specialists, told my symptoms were “normal” and handed the pill or other forms of birth control to manage them.
And I stayed on them for years, too scared to know how I would go off all these medications.

It wasn’t until I worked with a naturopath myself that I finally felt heard and began to understand how to actually support my body.

And here’s the thing: these symptoms still pop up for me.
Breakouts, fatigue, painful periods - they’re not failures. They’re signals.
A gentle nudge to ask: where am I not looking after myself right now?

Healing isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about having the tools to come back to yourself, over and over again.

That’s what I offer my clients - support from someone who’s walked (and is still walking) the path too.

Think you need expensive testing to understand your hormones?
Not always.

One of the most effective tools I use in clinic is your standard GP bloods - the same ones you can request during a routine check-up.

But here’s the difference:
It’s not just about running the tests - it’s about interpreting them properly.

GPs often assess bloods using very broad reference ranges.
If your results fall “within range,” you’re told everything is normal even if you’re dealing with acne, PMS, fatigue, or irregular cycles.

And in many cases, they don’t even tell you when to do the test.
Timing matters a lot - especially for hormones like oestrogen and progesterone, which fluctuate throughout your cycle.

As a naturopath, I look at:
🩸 Optimal ranges — not just ‘normal’ ones
📈 Ratios and trends — how your hormones relate to each other
🧭 Cycle day testing — for the most accurate picture

Some of the hormones I assess via standard bloods:
🩸 Oestrogen + Progesterone (tested at the right times of your cycle)
🧬 Testosterone + DHEA
💡 SHBG + Insulin
🌪 Thyroid panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4)

This is the foundation of every personalised hormone plan — because when we understand your body clearly, we can support it with confidence.

The term “hormonal imbalance” gets thrown around a lot.
But what does it actually mean?

In clinic, it’s one of the most common phrases I hear from women — often without clarity on what’s really going on in their body.

When I talk about hormonal imbalances, I’m not just looking for one hormone that’s high or low.
I’m looking at the relationship between your hormones — and whether they’re communicating properly.

Some of the most common patterns I see:

💥 Oestrogen dominance — oestrogen is too high relative to progesterone
🩸 Low progesterone — indicates anovulation and is common post-pill or in chronically stressed women
🧬 High androgens (like testosterone + DHEA) — driving acne, hair loss, or PCOS
💡 Insulin dysregulation — affecting blood sugar, mood, and hormonal balance
🌪 Thyroid issues — impacting skin texture, energy, metabolism, and cycle length

These imbalances can trigger skin flares, PMS, irregular cycles, fatigue, anxiety — and more.
But they’re not random. They’re your body’s way of asking for support.

The good news? We can test for all of this and create a plan that works with your body, not against it.

One of my favourite parts of this work is the real relationships I get to build with my clients and with this community!

So today, something a little more personal 💛

Here are 10 things you (probably) didn’t know about me…

1️⃣ I never set out to become a skin-focused naturopath — but now I can’t imagine doing anything else
2️⃣ I’ve experienced my own journey with acne and hormonal imbalances
3️⃣ I will always recommend more protein and fewer supplements
4️⃣ I’m a Capricorn sun and Gemini moon — equal parts structured planner and curious overthinker
5️⃣ My go-to nervous system support is getting into the ocean
6️⃣ I’ll choose a savoury breakfast 100% of the time
7️⃣ I genuinely get excited reviewing blood tests (yes, really)
8️⃣ I live by the phrase: “Your symptoms aren’t random, they’re your body asking you to listen”
9️⃣ My favourite skin nutrient? Zinc — always
🔟 I love camping and once spent 6 months travelling around Australia in a van, consulting with clients from the road

Any of these facts about me surprise you?

You don’t need to overhaul your entire diet to start supporting your gut.

These are some of the simplest rituals I share with clients — easy to implement, and incredibly effective when done consistently:

🥬 Start meals with bitter foods (like rocket, lemon juice, or apple cider vinegar) to stimulate digestion
🍽️ Eat slowly and chew thoroughly — aim for 20–30 chews per bite
📵 Avoid screens while eating to help your body shift into 'rest + digest'
🌡️ Choose warm, cooked meals over raw salads — especially in colder months or when digestion feels sluggish
🧘🏼‍♀️ Take 3 deep breaths before eating to calm your nervous system

None of these are flashy.
But they create the conditions your gut needs to actually absorb, repair, and restore.

Start with one. Let it become part of your rhythm. Then build from there.

You’ve cut out gluten.
Ditched dairy.
Tried low FODMAP, low histamine, even fasted through flare-ups…

And yet the bloating, breakouts, and gut discomfort still show up.

Here’s why: restriction doesn’t fix the root cause.

Functional gut testing (like the Complete Microbiome Map) gives us a full picture of what’s actually going on inside so we can stop guessing and start healing.

In 1:1 consultations, we look beyond food to explore:
🦠 Bacterial imbalances (dysbiosis)
🔥 Inflammation and leaky gut
🪱 Parasites or pathogens
💩 Digestive function and enzyme output
😵‍💫 Stress and nervous system load

With this insight, your treatment plan becomes clear and personalised — no more bandaids or elimination overwhelm.

Your symptoms are valid.
And your body deserves answers, not more restriction.
