When I decided to embark on a PhD a couple of years ago (in addition to my role at The Dyslexia Hub), the main impetus behind this possibly delusional move was a desire to investigate topics that - as a practitioner - I was struggling to find reliable information on. Twice-exceptionality and the intersection of giftedness and dyslexia was one such topic.

I am therefore incredibly proud to be sharing this review that I have authored - together with the wonderful Tanya Serry & Pam Snow - on identifying dyslexia in the gifted child, published today in 'Dyslexia'.

Dyslexia is an educational psychology journal for research concerning the psychology, special education, therapy, neuroscience, & psychiatry associated with dyslexia.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE & MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

It's been a crazy few years and demand for our services has gone through the roof. We're at capacity and urgently need to expand our team. We're therefore on the lookout for passionate, committed and informed teaching and allied health professionals interested in joining us at The Dyslexia Hub.

* We’re currently a team of 4 specialist teachers – all Science of Reading enthusiasts and all super passionate about working with neurodivergent kids & teens.
* Although you’ll operate as an independent practitioner (so can set your own time fraction, work hours etc.), you’ll get the many benefits of working as part of a team – referrals, collaboration, support and resource-sharing. It’s the best of both worlds!
* We offer a great central location (close to the train station, Greensborough Plaza & Watermarc), well-appointed rooms, an amazing decodable book and SoR resource library and competitive room rental rates. What's not to love about that?
https://www.thedyslexiahub.com.au/

We value initiative and a willingness to learn over all else, and we're more than happy to mentor those new to private practice. If literacy's not your thing, we're also keen to hear from Maths specialists.

Serious applicants only. If you have no knowledge of structured literacy practices or the Science of Reading, no interest in learning more about dyslexia and other learning differences or are unable to work before and/or after school hours (at least 2 days/week), this probably isn't the opportunity for you.

For more info, please send your resume and an introductory letter to Amanda - kranz.amanda(at)gmail.com. Tell me a bit about your SoR journey, your experience working with neurodivergent kids and why you think you’d be an asset to The Dyslexia Hub team.

Ellen Fanning, telling it like it is! 🙌

“Using the discredited ‘whole language’ approach instead of phonics when teaching kids to read is ‘bullsh*t’. Well said, and couldn’t agree more, Ellen Fanning! ”

Brilliant depiction of the difference that accommodations can make!

I tried to capture visually the difference that accommodations can make. When we go through our days, lots of niggly things that seem small can build up and mean that one more demand can result in overwhelm. With accommodations, things are still there in the background but supports are in place and so the same demand won't have the same impact.

This is highly simplified and of course on different days different factors can have more or less of an impact, but hopefully you find it useful.

Image description: a 3 panel comic with a brown background. The heading reads ‘Accommodations make a difference’, below the heading text says ‘The ability to do a task can be impacted by many factors. On any given day, the combination that results in overload can be different.
Simple accommodations can increase someone's enjoyment of, or capacity and ability to do, a task.’ The first panel has a scale from 0-100 with different coloured boxes from green at the bottom to red at the top, the boxes in ascending order are: tight clothes, bright lights, multiple noise sources, hunger, strong perfume, didn’t sleep well, need a break, don’t understand task, high pain levels. The top box sits on top about to fill up the scale to 100 – the box says ‘someone asks a question.’ Above this text says: One more task demand or something unexpected could result in overwhelm/ meltdown for this person. Middle panel: a bulleted list says ‘What if the same person has: Taken a break, Had a snack recently, Can wear comfy clothes to work, Has been given clear task demands, Colleagues don't wear strong perfume, Can wear noise cancelling headphones’. Below this are some of the coloured boxes from the first panel all smaller with a spiky circle that says ‘these factors now have less impact.’ Third panel: text at the top says ‘With accommodations in place, the same demand, 'someone asking a question', doesn't have the same impact.’ This is the difference simple accommodations can make. There is the 0-100 scale but now only 3 boxes (bright lights, didn’t sleep well, high pain levels) are filled in, a yellow box (someone asks a question) fits on top and doesn’t cause overwhelm – this is the difference simple accommodations can make.

We talk a lot about the Science of Reading, but here's a wonderful article on the Science of Maths.

The SoM is not a program or approach - rather, it is a movement that promotes the use of objective evidence on the way that students learn maths to inform teaching practices. Makes sense, right?

The following areas of instruction are the 'Big 5' according to the SOM:
* explicit, systematic instruction
* the use of visual representations and hands-on tools to help students “see” abstract concepts
* teaching math language and vocabulary
* building fluency in math facts and solving equations
* solving word problems

When it comes to best instructional practices, experts say the two subjects have parallel problems–and solutions.
