“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox, rather than choose up sides” - Tony Schwartz, founder and CEO of The Energy Project.
People with OCD often struggle with black-and-white thinking and the need for certainty. Tony Schwartz’s idea of embracing paradox, openness, and curiosity can be helpful as it helps us articulate why we do what we do when it comes to ERP — but only if applied without falling into the reassurance trap!
Instead of seeking answers, try the following:
❌ “I don’t need to be 100% certain because I checked once.” (Reassurance)
✅ “I’d like certainty, but I can cope without it.” (Openness)
❌ “This discomfort will pass, so I don’t need to worry.” (Reassurance)
✅ “This discomfort is here. I notice it in my body. I am choosing to lean into it.” (Tolerance)
❌ “I can have intrusive thoughts and still be a good person.” (Reassurance)
✅ “Maybe this thought means something, maybe it doesn’t.” (Acceptance of uncertainty)
The goal isn’t to resolve doubt but to make peace with it. Freedom comes from learning to coexist with uncertainty, not from eliminating it.
