Laura shares a brelfie from her first beach day with her boy. Such a precious moment from her breastfeeding journey, it reminds us all how natural and beautiful this connection is. 💖 Thank you, Laura, for supporting our campaign to normalise breastfeeding wherever life takes you!

The incredible thing about positioning and attaching a baby to the breast correctly is the sigh of relief from a mother who has achieved it with no pain, sometimes even when her ni***es have been damaged.

Now her baby is drinking beautifully, Mum’s shoulders relaxed, hear the swallows, milk flowing from breast to baby.

Bliss!

Please enjoy this poem, written by a now retired nurse and midwife who dedicated many years to supporting mothers through birth and breastfeeding:
Thank you Edwina.

NOW THAT YOU’RE A MUM.

A POEM BY EDWINA SMITH.

Now that you’re a Mum
There’s such a lot to learn
When to feed, how to feed
We’ll cover each in turn

Baby shows the signs
By turning of her head
Sucking fingers, licking lips
She’s asking to be fed
Time to unwrap
Bring her ‘chest to chest’
A few simple steps will see
Her feeding at the breast

Comfort for the Mum
Whatever hold you use
Cradle, clutch, lying down
‘Tis for you to choose
Back and feet supported
A comfy bed or chair
You can feed anytime
And feed anywhere

Pause and take a look
At where your ni**le’s found
Bring baby to the breast
Ne’er t’other way ‘round
Shape the breast as needed
Align ni**le and nose
Tease her mouth to open
And then on she goes!

How to tell she’s on quite well
Check her nose is clear
Chin applied, mouth full and wide
And held close and near
When you see these things
And the joy it brings
With head and neck in line
She’s on quiet well and you can tell
The hold and latch are fine

Perhaps a little daunting
You’ve read lots of books
Learning how to latch
Is harder than it looks.
Practicing the skill
Persist and it will come
A new beginning lies ahead
Now that you’re a Mum!

The most important thing for effective milk removal is correct position and attachment at the breast. I love helping Mums with this as there is often instant comfort and improved sucking and swallowing by the baby!
It’s great to see the smiles and the joy comfortable breastfeeding brings!

As babies grow, different feeding positions also bring a smile to your face! Always ready to go wherever you are!! A quick drink between play!

Lactation has important health benefits for babies and mothers, but new research has discovered it improves women’s cardiovascular health.
