Welcome back to the Byerley Off The Track Series. Here we recognise our ex-racehorses who have been part of the Byerley Racing Club team.
Wherever Hugo, or ‘Hugo’ was retired in July 2019 after 6 unsuccessful starts it being decided racing was not be his greatest talent. Hugo was transferred to Byerley’s RV acknowledged re-trainer, Elle McKenzie, who did a fantastic job in retraining him. In fact at his first show, only a couple of months into his re-training, he was winning ribbons!
At the conclusion of his training Elle found Hugo the ideal owner in Leigh Sexton, who was South Australian based. Leigh describes Hugo as “an absolute character”. Leigh explains “Hugo has taken to life after racing incredibly well. He is a horse that when he has a job to do, he thrives. He greets me every day with a whinny and a knicker and together we have formed an incredible bond”.
Leigh has extended Hugo’s re-training to natural horsemanship including liberty work, and said she says he also absolutely loves bouncing over poles and grids.
Byerley Racing Club is committed to it’s retired racehorses and much like our other Byerley retirees, we have loved following Hugo’s off the track progress with his adoring owner Leigh.
