Inner strength - what is it? Where does it come from? How do we get more of it?

What is Inner strength?

Inner strength comes from within. It is drawing on our own internal experience, emotional regulation and self-belief. We need inner strength when we are going through tough times or when we are being challenged in some way.

Inner strength can come from;

- Our own personality traits (some of us are more stubborn than others!)
- Previous experiences - going through tough times in the past teaches us that we can survive! We can reflect on these and know that we can deal with what life throws at us
- Emotional regulation - our ability to draw on our own emotions, experience them and regulate to the situation

How do we get more inner strength?

- We need to validate our experience and emotions first - recognise what you are going through and why and allow that to be. For example, if you are experiencing a loss, of course you are going to feel sad and grieve about this

- Vent our emotions - to continue to have inner strength, we also need to let off the pressure valve every so often. Cry, chat to friends (or a therapist), exercise, punch a pillow! Breaking down is necessary to get back up

- Lean into your support network - inner strength doesn’t have to just come from within. We can gain the support of others to fill our own tank and remember what they have said to use again in the future

- Lifting weights - when you lift weights, you are challenging yourself. This also reminds us that we are physically strong, which serves as a great feedback loop to be mentally strong.

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

Have you faced a setback or a disappointment lately?

It’s easy to get down and discouraged and feel like you are back at the beginning.

But you never go back, you only move forward.

Take what you have learned.
Remind yourself of the struggles you have overcome in the past.

You are now wiser and stronger.
You have experience.
Use this to move forward.

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

When we set a goal, we often expect the process to achieve it will be straightforward. This can actually set us up for failure.

What we need to do is anticipate that we will hit bumps in the road:
- self doubt
- failing
- practising
- feeling lost
- struggling

When we can anticipate that this will happen, we can plan for what to do in those times.

Sometimes we need to reassess, get more information or advice, practice patience, take a rest, practice self compassion, problem solve and then go again.

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

If you talk to any behaviour change expert, they will tell you the same thing, if you want to make (and sustain) a change, it is about doing something consistently.

Start small and do a little each day.
Then build that little change into a bigger change and do that every day.

Make it a habit.

Even if you can’t put in the same effort on any given day, put in some effort and still do it.

For eg, if you would like to be active everyday, some days you will hit massive goals and feel great. Other days you might be time poor and sleep deprived so a gentle walk will be the way to go. Being consistently active will help you to see the change.

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

Life is so busy.

We are always running from one thing to the next.

Then we ask ourselves ‘why is time going so fast? I can’t believe we are halfway through the year!’

It’s often because we aren’t taking a moment to be mindful.
To enjoy the little things.
To just be in the moment and be present with those around you.

Start today. Take some ‘mindful moments’ to just be 😇

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

I am hopeless with directions.

I feel so much better when I have Google maps handy to help me find the way.

Sometimes, I will take a different turn but I know it will get me there (maybe with some site seeing along the way).

Life is much the same.

We have expectations of how we think things are going to go and how to get there.

But sometimes we take a different turn or there is an unexpected road closure. We don’t just stop the car and give up our journey - we keep going and find a different way.

There is no ‘right’ way or ‘wrong’ turn.
This is your journey and your life.

Be like Google maps and adapt and find another way. You might just discover some nice scenery along the way!

Athlete: Coach, today was brutal. My legs gave out, my mind was screaming. I wanted to stop so badly.

Coach: But you didn’t. That matters.

Athlete: Barely. I felt weak. I felt like I had nothing left.

Coach: And still you kept moving. That’s not weakness. That’s grit.

Athlete: But I wasn’t strong today. I broke down.

Coach: No. You broke through. Real toughness isn’t loud. It’s the whisper that says, “Keep going,” when everything in you begs to quit.

Athlete: So mental toughness is about silence?

Coach: It’s about decisions. Not giving your pain a vote. Not letting temporary discomfort decide your long-term destiny.

Athlete: But how do I train that? How do I become tougher?

Coach: You already are. Every time you face the wall and choose to push… that’s training. Every moment you say, “Not yet,” when your body says, “I’m done,” you’re building armor.

Athlete: Even if I slow down?

Coach: Slowing down isn’t quitting. Toughness isn’t about pace it’s about refusal. The refusal to give in. The refusal to walk off.

Athlete: So, the pain is part of it?

Coach: Pain is the currency. Mental toughness is what you buy with it.

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

‘Just be in the moment.’

The concept of mindfulness is to learn to just be in the moment, in the ‘here and now’, allowing past concerns to stay in the past and future worries to stay in the present.

This can help in times of stress and overwhelm. If you have a lot of things coming up and you find yourself worrying about all of them and how you are going to cope, come back to the here and now. Say to yourself ‘I will worry about that when I get there.’ For now, I choose to just be in the moment. I know I can cope with hard things and I will deal with it when the time comes.

Mindfulness can also help us to be present in nice and enjoyable moments such as appreciating family time, being on holidays, enjoying a nice meal. Instead of being distracted on devices or asking ‘what’s next?’ we can just focus on the moment we are in ♥️

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

Did you know, we have around 60000 thoughts per day and around 90% of these thoughts are repetitive? 🤔😳

If you are concentrating on the negative and putting yourself down, that is a LOT of criticism circulating your brain each day. 😥

See if you can focus on building yourself up. 😇

If you are anxious, remind yourself that you have done hard things before and focus on the tools you know to handle anxiety.

Changing your language from ‘I have to…’ to ‘I get to…’ can shift your perspective.

Focus on what is good about a situation.

Remember what and who you are grateful for in your life.

Get excited about something in the future 🌟

Let’s shift some of those 60000 thoughts and see how your day changes!

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

Your mind will believe what you continuously tell it.

Your brain forms neural pathways and these become very well defined.

If you are constantly having these thoughts…
‘I’m not good enough.’
‘I’m a failure.’
‘I’m stupid.’

Then your mind becomes very efficient at responding to any challenge or upset or situation with these same thoughts.

So, you need to change your thoughts to form new neural pathways.

You could start with:
‘I made a mistake. I’m only human.’
‘I’m not perfect and I don’t need to be.’
‘I can try my best.’

Then you can start forming new beliefs about yourself and a better coping strategy, building self belief and self esteem 😇

‘I can’t do this!’

How many times have you said that to yourself?

When faced with a new challenge, we can be filled with self doubt about our ability to attempt it.

However, looking at your track record can be a really helpful tool to build faith in yourself that you can attempt it!

Consider all the times in the past when you conquered something that you thought you couldn’t. Use this as evidence to propel you towards the next challenge 💪🏻

😇 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 😇

When we are faced with difficulties, we need to develop coping behaviours. Sometimes, these make us feel immediately better. For example, you have a hard day at work so you eat some chocolate. This is ok in isolation but when it becomes an ongoing coping strategy, it doesn’t work anymore - it becomes a problem of its own.

Think about your patterns of behaviour.
🤔 What is serving you?
🤔 What is helping you to create the life you want?
🤔 What is holding you back?
🤔 What do you avoid?

If you want to take things to the next level, you need to change your patterns of behaviour that don’t support the life you want.

👉🏻 Start small.
👉🏻 Ask for advice or support.
👉🏻 Know it’s going to be a challenge and be prepared for that (your brain will want to do what it always has done).
👉🏻 Remind yourself of why you don’t want to repeat the old patterns and the life you want to create instead.
