April is 🍀Autism Acceptance Month, a time to be aware, include, appreciate and support the neurodivergent community.
While Autism and ADHD are distinct diagnoses, the "overlap" in their neurochemistry and clinical presentation is so significant that it has led to the informal term "AuDHD."
Research suggests that a high percentage of individuals on the autism spectrum also meet the criteria for ADHD, and vice-versa.
The Neurochemical Bridge between ADHD and Autism intersects at a brain chemistry standpoint by:
➡️ Dopamine Regulation manifesting as a search for stimulation
➡️ Glutamate & GABA Balance where excitatory (Glutamate) and inhibitory (GABA) neurotransmitters are out of sync leading to sensory processing sensitivities
➡️ Executive Function where challenges with transitions, organization, and emotional regulation become part of the neurodivergent experience
Understanding these biochemical pathways is the first step toward moving from "struggling" to "thriving”
