What is included in your consultation and why is it important?
👂 We will give you a thorough rundown of the procedure, what to expect, your options and we'll discuss risks and benefits of the procedure. We'll give you time to ask questions (and please do, we love it!) We will get you to sign a consent form before we proceed.
🖊️ We need to know if you have a significant medical and surgical history that will indicate that it is too risky to continue with the procedure. We are very interested in all things head, neck, throat and ears but will ask about everything.
- We need to know if you are on any medications (please bring a list if you need to!)
-We need to know if you have any allergies to anything, not just medications.
🔦 We'll have a good look in your ear with an auriscope (or otoscope), an instrument commonly used by GPs. We look at the walls of the canal, we'll inspect your ear drum (if we can see it) and we'll look at the colour and consistency of the wax.
📈 We'll perform tympanometry, an important test to assess the compliance of your ear drum. It is quick, painless (you may feel a little 'whoosh' of pressure) but critical to ensuring that you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure.
🔬 Based on the information collected, if we decide that you are a good candidate for nurse-led wax removal, we will continue with the procedure. Whilst we specialise in microsuction, we may employ another method or two to assist including aural irrigation and manual extraction.
🔦 Following the procedure, we'll re-examine your ears using an otoscope and tympanometry.
👂 We'll have a discussion about general ear health and provide education on caring for your ears.
✉️ Following the consultation, if you wish, we are happy to send a letter to your GP advising them of the procedure and outcome.
* If at any stage we decide not to continue, we will discuss options with you.
❓ If you have any questions, please ask away!
