On National Asthma Day, we support the Global Initiative for Asthma’s call for access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma.

Asthma affects 260 million people worldwide, and over 450,000 deaths occur annually, most of which are preventable. Inhaled corticosteroids are essential for controlling asthma and preventing attacks, yet many still lack access.

At our clinic we are committed to supporting patients with asthma, ensuring they receive the care they need to manage their condition and live healthy, everyday lives.

Heart Week (4–10 May) is a great time to check in on your heart health ❤️

Many of the factors that affect your heart, like blood pressure and cholesterol, don’t always show obvious symptoms. A Heart Health Check can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

It’s a simple appointment with the doctor, usually around 20 minutes. You’ll talk through your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, family history, and lifestyle — and leave with a clearer picture of your heart health, along with practical steps to help manage it.

You may be eligible if you are:
▪ Aged 45–79
▪ An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 30 or over

Heart Week is a good reminder to book an appointment and take a proactive step for your health.

Can’t get to the clinic but need a repeat prescription? Some of the doctors at Westcare Family Medical Centre now offer repeat prescription requests without an appointment.

✔ For existing patients
✔ For medications your regular doctor has already prescribed
✔ Request more than one medication at a time

- Addictive medications (including benzodiazepines and opiates) are not provided through this service
- If your doctor is away or needs to review you, you may be asked to book an appointment

April is Stress Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, Be the Change, is a reminder to take an active role in your health and wellbeing.

Stress is more common than we think, and it can show up in ways we don’t always recognise. Noticing the signs is the first step:
• Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried
• Changes in sleep or appetite
• Difficulty concentrating
• Irritability or mood changes
• Physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue

Being the change starts with small, everyday actions—checking in with yourself, managing stress, and prioritising your wellbeing. Over time, these actions can help build resilience and create lasting change.

March 19 is National Close the Gap Day.

This year's theme: Agency, Leadership, Reform — ensuring the survival, dignity and wellbeing of First Nations peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians still face a life expectancy gap of around eight years compared to non-Indigenous Australians. Closing that gap starts with access to the right care at the right time.

The 715 Health Check is a free, comprehensive health assessment available to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of any age, every 9 to 12 months. It covers physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and opens the door to additional bulk-billed allied health services, follow-up care, and chronic disease management.
Right now, only about 30% of eligible people are getting their health check. That number needs to change.

If you or a family member are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, contact your local GP or Aboriginal Medical Service and ask about booking a 715 Health Check. It takes under an hour and is government funded.
