Not only does EMDR work but it is a less invasive therapy. Through EMDR therapy you do NOT need to talk about or re-tell your traumatic experiences. I do NOT want you to be re triggered by the details of the even other events. I DO want you to be able to recover from those events and become the person you want to be 💫

Warning ⚠️*Discusses sexual abuse* I wanted to put a post up to spread the word about this beautiful Netflix Documentary. I strongly recommend that everyone watch this if you are able to. I am in awe of these men who were able to share their story, grow and heal together and possibly provide some comfort to others who have also been abused.

What is EMDR & is it scientifically proven?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement and Desensitization Therapy, can help your BODY and BRAIN to accept that the traumatic event is in the past. This allows your body to come out of its Fight or Flight mode, decrease your heightened cortisol levels and decrease or even eliminate the ongoing effects of traumatic events.

Mental Health Awareness 💫
Sometimes it can feel like you have something to hide if you have a mental illness. Particularly if you’re going through a rough patch. Let’s fight the stigma. If you have depression, anxiety, PTSD or ANY other mental illness this is nothing to be ashamed of! Humans are complex. We react to the situations we have survived. We are guided by our genetics. Everyone is different in their own way and that is what makes life interesting. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and we should celebrate that. Let’s help each other through our rough times; because we all have them at some point. 😉 🤘

Be Kind 💫
Often times when people are feeling down they will express feeling disheartened, disappointed in themselves or even worthless. If you’re feeling this way today or any other day I encourage you to question if a friend was feeling this way what would you say to them? Would you be as harsh on them as you are on yourself? Probably not 😉

Try to shift your perspective; this can be a learnt habit. Start small, list 3 things that you are good at or that you are proud of. If you’re feeling like this more often than you would like to it can be a sign that you need to focus on some self care. ✨

Reach out if you need help on your mental health journey & be kind to yourself 💖

Prince Harry is a great advocate for promoting awareness of mental health. He has spoken about receiving EMDR therapy to help him to recover from the trauma of witnessing his mothers coffin being lowered.
EMDR is a great and effective therapy which can be used for numerous mental health issues and symptoms.

According to the EMDR Institute, it “is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.”

“It claims to provide faster healing time than with more traditional forms of psychotherapy, for issues such as poor self esteem, feeling powerless and other problems that cause people to seek help.” independent.co.uk

One in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2009).

During a depressive episode, the person experiences depressed mood (feeling sad, irritable, empty) or a loss of pleasure or interest in activities, for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. Several other symptoms are also present, which may include poor concentration, feelings of excessive guilt or low self-worth, hopelessness about the future, thoughts about dying or su***de, disrupted sleep, changes in appetite or weight, and feeling especially tired or low in energy. (World Health Organisation, 2021)

If you’re experiencing symptoms of depression don’t feel like you need to push through or fix it on your own. Just like a physical ailment, sometimes people need help to overcome depression. Speak to your doctor or reach out to a therapist and remember that even the simple things can improve your mood. Try spending time with a friend, going for a walk, do something creative, or even just having a bath or a shower 😉🌻🌻🌻

Anxiety can be a very unpleasant emotion but it’s a natural response. When we encounter uncomfortable emotions are automatic response if often to run from them, deny the feeling or dismiss it. This will sometimes work but often if depresses it only for it to pop up again later and often the feeling grows. Learning to sit with discomfort is an important skill. Once you can sit with that feeling you can observe it, feel it and reflect on it. Where is this feeling coming from? It may not be the obvious or immediate answer you would have initially thought of. Addressing where the anxiety is coming from and understanding what it is trying to tell you can help you overcome it 😉💫✨

Most people have heard the saying ‘put one foot in front of the other’. Although simple it is a very useful tactic. Sometimes just getting through that moment, that hour or that day is enough to get you through to a moment of feeling better. Remember when you’re feeling in the dark your mind is clouded and you probably aren’t seeing all of the solutions or positives in a situation. 🌻🌞✨

Perhaps instead of being reminded by the difficulties that have come with this year we can appreciate the needed change it has brought to the world. If we all step back and stay in the present we can see all of the connections going on in the world and that if we all widen our vision to include those around us we may be able to make a lot of small positive changes which would inevitably make some big steps for the greater good.
