They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#10: Stress and nervous system dysregulation 😫

Mouth breathing is linked with increased activation of the sympathetic nervous system—the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response. This can keep the nervous system in a heightened state of arousal, even when there’s no immediate threat.

When this state becomes prolonged, it can contribute to heightened stress, reduced vagal tone, and difficulty regulating breathing during everyday activities or in response to stress.

If your system feels constantly “on edge”, your breathing pattern may be part of what’s keeping you there.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#9: It can affect cognitive function 😵‍💫

Poor breathing patterns and disrupted sleep can both have flow-on effects for how clearly you think and how well your brain functions.

Adults who habitually breathe through their mouth often report brain fog, memory lapses, and difficulty concentrating—particularly when breathing is fast, shallow, or irregular.

If you’re noticing changes in focus or mental clarity, it’s worth considering whether your breathing could be contributing.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#8: Disrupt digestion and gut health 🍽️

Mouth breathing can interfere with the natural coordination between breathing and swallowing, increasing the risk of aerophagia—swallowing air. Over time, this may contribute to bloating, belching, and reflux, particularly in people already managing digestive symptoms.

It also increases sympathetic nervous system activity, which can slow digestion, and reduces nitric oxide intake—important for gut blood flow and immune regulation.

These effects are often overlooked, but breathing patterns can play a meaningful role in digestive discomfort.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#7: It can worsen sinus issues and allergies 🤧

Mouth breathing bypasses the nose’s natural filtering system, allowing more allergens, dust, and irritants into the airways.

Over time, reduced airflow through the nose can lead to nasal disuse, where the nose becomes less efficient and more prone to feeling blocked. This can increase the risk of hay fever symptoms, sinus congestion, and persistent nasal obstruction.

If your nose constantly feels blocked or irritated, your breathing pattern may be part of the picture.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#6: Increases the risk of infections 🦠

The nose plays an important role in respiratory defence—it filters, humidifies, and warms the air before it reaches the lungs.

When you breathe through your mouth, you bypass these protections. This allows cold, dry, and unfiltered air to reach the throat and airways, increasing the risk of sore throats, coughs, and respiratory illness.

If you’re frequently unwell or dealing with recurring infections, it may be worth considering how you're breathing day to day.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#5: Exacerbate respiratory conditions 😮‍💨

Mouth breathing bypasses the nose’s natural defences and nitric oxide production, allowing cold, dry, unfiltered air to irritate the airways. This can alter breathing mechanics and increase airway sensitivity—making coughing, wheezing, or breathlessness more difficult to manage in conditions like asthma or COPD.

For some, it can also increase the sensation of breathlessness, even when oxygen levels are normal, with symptoms that seem disproportionate to clinical findings.

If that sounds familiar, your breathing pattern could be contributing more than you realise.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#4: Dysfunctional breathing pattern.

Mouth breathing is typically faster and more shallow than nasal breathing. Over time, this can lead to habitual over-breathing, which disrupts the body’s CO₂ balance and affects how efficiently oxygen is delivered to tissues.

This may leave you feeling breathless, light-headed, or anxious, particularly during stress or physical activity.

If your breathing feels out of sync—even when tests come back normal—it may be a sign of a dysfucntional breathing pattern.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#3: Increases the risk of sleep-disordered breathing 😴

Breathing through your mouth during sleep can reduce airway stability, making it more likely to partially or fully collapse. This increases the risk of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Both are linked to disrupted sleep, reduced oxygen levels, and long-term impacts on cardiovascular health and daytime functioning.

If you wake unrefreshed or have been told you snore or stop breathing during sleep, mouth breathing may be playing a role.

10 reasons why mouth breathing is bad for your health.

#2: Contributes to neck, shoulder and back pain. 😩

Mouth breathing is commonly linked with upper chest breathing and changes in posture. Over time, this can lead to a forward head position and overuse of the muscles around the neck, shoulders, and upper back.

These postural changes can cause ongoing muscular tension and may reduce the effectiveness of the diaphragm and deep core muscles, which play an important role in both breathing and spinal support.

If pain or tension persists despite treatment, it might be worth considering whether breathing mechanics are part of the problem.
