Another excellent episode. Hear that the male and female brain are the same, the neuroscience of racism, how the patriarchy formed and more. πŸπŸ’•

It's human nature to form groups β€” families, friends, online communities. We love to be surrounded by people similar to us. But that can also make us discriminatory and defensive. And social media makes that instinct worse. Today, we look at how our brains evolved to connect and divide, and what t...

The Big 5 are often referred to in psychology speak. I would thoroughly recommend this book. It came to my attention back in 2008 through an article in the New Scientist magazine. The article is entitled "It Takes All Sorts". The issue is dated 9-2-2008; pages 34-37. The author has done a marvelous job of summarising the Big 5; extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness and openness. The breaking down of brain function associated with each of these is also beautifully done. πŸπŸ’•

For 8 months, images and videos of the carnage in Gaza have been flooding social media. They give a powerful view of what's happening on the ground – but they also have the potential to cause vicarious trauma. Today – what is vicarious trauma, and why doomscrolling doesn't help.

Why do otherwise sensible people continue to do things that are bad for them, that impact negatively on their personal future? Also, what happens in the brain when you're trying to make or break a habit? Temptation, addiction and habit formation – mapping the pathways to self-destruction and ho.....

Further to the post re psychedelic use in mental health treatments: In 1990 this was published in the states. It’s not like this investigation has just begun. Crazy that our Australian TGA (therapeutic goods administration) has disallowed trials until so recently and then jumped the gun by rescheduling psylocybin in July 2023 before thorough trials could be conducted and therapeutic stages and processes rolled out in tandem (which are essential). It’s not a magic bullet. Work is involved folks, hard work. πŸπŸ’•

This episode of Compass gives an excellent illustrative warning on using psilocybin without proper adjunct treatments in unison. πŸπŸ’•

The use of psychedelics to treat depression and trauma becomes legal in Australia, but it's not without risk. While many report life-changing benefits, many scientists fear the move is premature.

Be careful folks. Here’s a brilliant illustration of yet more greed and commodification of mental health issues. Excellent work Ange. Brave and beautiful Natalia. πŸ¦‹πŸπŸŒΊ

Natalia had a job at a prestigious university, $120,000 in the bank, a loving partner, and shared custody of her two sons. Then one day, a little over a year later, she woke up in a psychiatric hospital, where doctors told her she was experiencing what’s known as stimulant-induced psychosis.
