Hi , Today I did a live interview on ABC Gold Coast regarding be ready for back to school with regard to footwear and how to fit shoes for kids.
Part of the drive for the focus on footwear is to reduce musculoskeletal pain in children. Recent research suggested up to 40% of high school children suffered from foot, leg and ingrown toenail pain and 75 % thought it was related to there shoes.
Wearing tight shoes can cause Hallux Vagus -digital deformity in children.
We encourage parents to regularly check children footwear for signs of wear and check they are not too narrow or tight around the toes. We encourage 1cm room between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Securing the shoe well with laces or straps is also important. Get advice if you unsure by seeing a podiatrist if you have difficulties finding shoes that fit well.

Diabetes in Australia.
By Jodi Tanner-Podiatrist- Positive Podiatry-Gold Coast

Recently one of my patients asked me, “how many people in Australia have diabetes and were undiagnosed?”
Diabetes Australia tells us that up to 500,000 (1 in every 50) Australians may have diabetes without knowing.

Diabetes is a hidden menace to our health and wellbeing and if left undiagnosed and untreated is devastating to all the organs of our body.

Having worked as a podiatrist for 23 years and 3 years in high-risk foot clinics. I have seen the worst foot outcomes of poorly managed diabetes including foot collapse and foot amputation.

More recently I have noticed diabetic patients who have been living with diabetes for 10-20 years, who present with minimal signs of diabetic foot complications such as loss of protective foot sensations and peripheral arterial disease. This is mainly due to their diligence to treat the diabetes with medications, diet modifications and active lifestyle. Diabetes really is a treatable disease for many people.

Signs and symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes include fatigue, frequent urination, increased thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, infections that are slow to heal and pins and needles and burning in your feet and legs.

What we can all do to help.

Do you have a family member or friend who does not attend a GP? Encourage them to attend a GP for a yearly checkup. A simple blood test is all that is needed for diagnosis.

Your GP can also refer them for professional advice including diabetes educators, dieticians, exercise physiologists and podiatrists. Get them on track to treat this disease early.

Please send this message out to your family and friends.
