Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that is used to help individuals cope with and heal from trauma, anxiety, and other mental health issues. It was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro and has been widely used by mental health professionals to help people overcome a variety of psychological problems.

EMDR works by having the individual recall a traumatic or distressing experience while simultaneously engaging in a series of rapid eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. This is believed to help the individual process and integrate the experience in a healthy way, leading to a reduction in the intensity of negative emotions and other symptoms related to the experience.

EMDR has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and more. It can be a useful tool for individuals who have experienced trauma or other distressing events and may be struggling to cope with the emotional and psychological effects of those experiences.

Christmas is a time of year that for many of us can feel heavy with expectation. Don’t forget that this period will pass, and keep an eye out for unhelpful expectations. It is a good idea to look after yourself more than you usually would during this time. Start by listening to your feelings and acknowledge them as part of your experience.

If you’re finding yourself bombarded by requests and feeling that you’re falling short, it may be worth explaining that you’re stretched to the limit and say no to engagements. It may be that you wish you could, but self-care and your health is important. Be careful not to avoid all social engagements as interacting with others tends to benefit wellbeing.

Write a list of what is most important to you during the coming week, and which values you wish to stay aligned with. Having a set destination makes arriving at our goal far more likely.

If things get too overwhelming, there is no shame in seeking support. Nothing is more important than reaching out when things are too hard. This is a tough time of year for more than people than you might think.
