It’s normal for most to parents feel emotional or anxious in the first 2 weeks of having a baby. But if those feelings persist, it’s encouraged to talk to a friend or a health professional.

1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads will experience perinatal depression and anxiety.

This Perinatal Mental Health Week (6 – 12 November), let’s remind any expecting or new parents that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed and it’s okay to ask for help.

Practising self-care is so important for your wellbeing.

It's easy to forget to put your needs first, especially when you're busy. But doing a little something for yourself each day can be a helpful way to boost your mental health.

Self-care looks different for everyone, but examples can include:

• physical activity, such as yoga, running or lifting weights
• reading a book
• meditation
• painting, drawing or colouring-in
• listening to your favourite music or a podcast
• spending time with a friend or family member
• getting outside and being in nature

Create your own self-care plan: www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/news/the-importance-of-self-care-planning-during-coronavirus/

If you have been struggling with your mental health for more than 2 weeks, it’s time to talk to your GP.

For the first time in two years flu is circulating in NSW.

We are expecting an increase in all respiratory viruses this winter due to open borders, increased travel and the reduction in restrictions. And because we haven’t had flu in the community for a few years, our immunity against it is lower too.

Your best protection this winter is to get a flu vaccine, practice safe behaviours such as staying home when unwell. Also remember to keep up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations.
