I love zinc. It is the 'spark of life'. It is a mineral and an antioxidant.
Zinc is essential for good mood, we need zinc to feel calm and happy.
We need zinc to regulate our dopamine and serotonin in the brain.
Low Zinc = poor stress response.
(Peripheral) Zinc deficiency is associated with dyslexia.
Zinc with magnesium and B6 is great to promote healthy hormone levels - all month long.
We need zinc to promote a strong digestive system, helping us to properly digest food and keeping the tissues healthy.
We need zinc to keep muscles, ligaments, tendons, bone, skin, hair and nails strong. This is especially important in hair loss for any reason as it is a sign that the internal structure is also not strong.
Zinc is essential to assist with any skin issue, especially acne and psoriasis.
Zinc and selenium work together in the body as antioxidants and minerals in the heart, nervous system and reproductive system, especially the prostate and cervix where they prevent cancer.
Zinc helps promote apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells.
Zinc helps with weight loss, helps maintain a healthy weight and lowers blood sugar levels and inflammatory markers.
Zinc also helps anorexia sufferers maintain a normal weight.
Zinc deficiency seriously affects fertility in both men and women.
Zinc deficiency is associated with pregnancy loss.
Zinc in pregnancy helps with neurogenisis in the developing brain and in rat models the brain is larger than in those deprived of zinc, even if it was for a short period of time before conception.
Vitamin A helps with the absorption of zinc and works with vitamin C to make collagen. Zinc works with vitamins A, C, E and D3 to promote healthy immune response.
I have read that up to 85% of women and 50% of men are not getting enough zinc. This is not good as zinc should be present in every tissue and fluid of the body and still be stored in bone to promote healthy and strong bones.
This is made worse by cadmium toxicity which replaces zinc in the hundreds of functions performed - which means that they don't happen and then we slow down (hence the weight gain, loss of taste and smell and short temper).
Zinc is available in food but I would never ever suggest to someone with a zinc deficiency to try and treat the deficiency with food. After all, by the time the insufficiency has set in the digestive function is no longer strong.
The Cell Wellbeing Report has 4 areas where Zinc may be highlighted as an issue. I like to be sure about what to supplement and how long to take anything for.
Remember to include high zinc foods every day.
