Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get an NDIS plan:
1. Check Eligibility
First, determine if you are eligible for the NDIS. To qualify, you must:
Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
Be under 65 years of age when you apply.
Have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your ability to perform daily activities.
2. Make an Access Request
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you need to make an Access Request. You can do this by:
Calling the NDIS on 1800 800 110.
Completing an Access Request Form, which you can download from the NDIS website or get from an NDIS office.
Visiting a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) office.
You’ll need to provide evidence of your disability, which can include reports and assessments from health professionals.
3. Gather Evidence
Provide detailed information about how your disability impacts your daily life. This may include:
Medical reports.
Functional assessment reports.
Letters from doctors, therapists, or other health professionals.
4. NDIS Planning Meeting
If your Access Request is successful, you’ll be contacted to arrange a planning meeting. During this meeting, you’ll discuss your goals, needs, and the support you require. The meeting can be held:
Face-to-face.
Over the phone.
Via video conference.
5. Develop Your Plan
During the planning meeting, you’ll work with an NDIS planner or an LAC to develop your plan. Your plan will outline:
Your goals.
The supports you need (both funded and informal).
A budget for the funded supports.
6. Receive Your Plan
After your planning meeting, the NDIS will review your plan and approve the funding. You’ll receive your plan, which will include details on the supports funded by the NDIS and how much money is allocated to each support.
7. Implement Your Plan
Once you have your plan, you can start using the funded supports. You may choose to manage your plan in one of three ways:
Self-management: You manage your funding and pay for supports yourself.
Plan management: A registered plan management provider helps you manage your funding.
NDIS-managed: The NDIS directly pays providers on your behalf.
8. Review Your Plan
Your NDIS plan is reviewed regularly (usually every 12 months) to ensure it continues to meet your needs. During the review, you can make changes to your goals and the supports you need.
Additional Tips
Prepare thoroughly: Gather all necessary documents and evidence before making an Access Request.
Be clear about your needs: Clearly explain how your disability affects your life and what support you need.
Stay informed: Regularly check the NDIS website and other resources for updates and information.
For more detailed guidance, consider consulting with an NDIS support coordinator or advocate who can help navigate the process
