This week's blog (musing) - for others, please visit the website.

It is always interesting to look at different organisations and view what they say they do in terms of values. Quite often, what they say and what you see – may be quite different.

I have just returned from a holiday in which we cruised the Mekong River through Cambodia and Vietnam. Unfortunately, one of the guests became unwell on this trip and it was very interesting watching the organisation and how they acted for the individual and her family.

The organisation not only advised the family member on how to access health services, but they also sent a crew member who spoke both English and the native language. The crew member not only assisted them in the travel component but also translated for both the medical team and family. Not on one occasion but multiple. They certainly raised their bar when things got tough and it was noted by many of us on this journey.

This has had me thinking about incidents that have occurred at other organisations and how they reacted to adverse conditions. Did they step up, or down? I recall many incidents happening in my workplaces over the years and unfortunately, not all were handled so well as this one with compassion and care. At times, the written values and mission statement don’t match with their actions at all.

One of my workplaces claim that “people care for people”, yet when an incident happened, they didn’t deal with it at all. When I finally left due to this incident and others, they also denied me an exit interview. Thankfully I spoke with Human Resources and worked on another way of getting my information out. This process was clearly directed to allow bad and toxic behaviour to keep going without any solutions. This is not putting people first!

I have also had great experiences with workplaces and note that when cancer came into my life, a workplace of only two weeks was very supportive. Both at the time of my operation, radiation and chemotherapy. This was all happening with COVID and if there were any outbreaks at work, they encouraged me to work from home. They were exceptional for me at this time and I am very thankful, as I know that the family are from our cruise.

I believe that a person's character shows up when life goes pear shaped for them.

Their moral compass really kicks in and shows itself.

A great piece of advice from the King.

I can't wait to get my fingers all over this gazing ball. Back to mosaics after the long weekend.

What are your fingerprints over at the moment?

For me, having a great self-care plan helps me to be the best version of me.

We have just returned from our trip to Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore. I will post some pictures of our time when I have a chance to download them.

As part of our experiences, we booked into two cooking and food experiences. Hoping to be able to replicate the recipes at home. Will need to visit the local Asian food stores to find the ingredients.

What is part of your self-care plan? Does yours need a revamp?

Back to work today after a vacation.

My values help guide all the decisions I make. Both at work and in my personal life.

This week's blog/musing - for others, please visit the website.

This week’s conversation is around “quality” and the standard of quality may differ for us all as this is subjective to our own experience or expectation.

Cambridge dictionary states that quality is a standard, how good or bad “something” is, a high standard and quality of life. This reinforces to me, that we all expect different things with a “standard”.

For some of us, we do a “standard” for us and have a different score card for others. One that raises the bar for the services from others yet holds it lower for ourselves! I’m not sure if that is a fair scoreboard.

Quality of life is also subjective and personal to us all. For me, this is finding the balance between work and home life. As an accredited mental health social worker, I need to have a minimum amount of training and supervision annually. I need to factor this into my work life and balance with time off to attend training and/or conferences.

Whilst the quote above is certainly true, for me, quality of life also includes recreational activities – holidays and self-care. So, my work-life balance also includes both. Leave and self-care are also personally based as these both need to be managed with available resources. Both include time and financial constraints.

My husband and I are self-employed, so time away needs to be managed to fit in with us both. We have planned a trip this holiday season and will be leaving just prior to the New Year celebrations. This year, our New Year is in Cambodia. We will also explore Vietnam and Singapore briefly. I am very much looking forward to experiencing the culture and food that all regions offer. We are away for approximately three weeks and once again, I have decided to place my work social media “on hold” during this period. This is a conscious effort to lead into the holiday period as stress free as possible and improve my quality of life prior to leaving.

I must admit that I have not placed a lot of planning for this holiday, I have trusted both our local travel agent and the cruise for many of the experiences during this time. I have balanced both the touring and rest days, to enjoy the experience and being present.

I will sign off for 2025 and see you in January.

With Christmas this week, this quote really stands out to me.

I am looking forward to the company of our friends and families, spending time together.

I am also looking forward to taking the time off, to enjoy my time exploring this beautiful world and other countries.

I do imagine though, that there will be times where I will be challenged and my glass half full will need to come out. I may also need to bring out my mindfulness to ensure that stress and/or anxiety remains in control.

This quote definitely applies to me.

I took time off earlier in the month to catch up with the Queensland contingent while they were in Melbourne. Christmas this week with our family (and extended family of choice).

This lovely Rhino statue was in the winery gardens from the visit to Yarra Valley.

Wondering what treasures I will find in December/January on our overseas trip?
