Lymphoedema can develop after breast cancer surgery or radiotherapy treatment. If lymph nodes are removed – usually from the armpit – fluid can build up and cause swelling known as ‘lymphoedema’.
Most people who are going to develop lymphoedema will see signs within 2 years of surgery. The risk is life-long though, so early intervention and monitoring are important.
SOZO can detect lymphoedema in its early stages and monitor it at any stage. Ideally, a baseline SOZO measurement would be taken before treatment begins but it can be done at anytime. Lymphoedema is treatable in a multitude of ways and monitoring with SOZO is a way to assess how well the treatment is working.
In addition to measuring fluid, SOZO can also be used to monitor skeletal muscle loss which can result from chemotherapy treatments. This condition, called sarcopenia affects overall health and quality of life. Ideally, a baseline SOZO measurement would be taken before treatment begins and then at regular intervals to track mass change. Understanding the extent of muscle loss is important for determining treatment options.
Both the lymphoedema and sarcopenia measurements can be taken at the same time and both are included in the $40 cost of a SOZO measurement at Harmony in Health & Nature, Mildura.
