Gestalt (pronounced 'ger-shtalt') Language Processing is a type of language development where children learn language from scripts, which are whole phrases or chunks of language. This differs from Analytic language development where you start with single words and build phrases and sentences from there.

Literature and research to date suggests that it is not a case of ‘one or the other’, but that children use both processes to learn language with a preference or dominance of one. A child with a language delay who mostly uses analytic processing might be stuck using single words, whereas a child with a language delay who mostly uses gestalt processing might be stuck using echolalia.

In this workshop Sunraysia Community Health Services Speech Pathologist Emily Leslie will explore what Gestalt Language Processing is and what it might look like in young language learners. Practical strategies will be shared about how to validate, respond to and support their communication in a variety of settings.

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Belinda Dixon, Occupational Therapist at SCHS

Bel's journey into Occupational Therapy (OT) started with a gentle nudge from her mum, who noticed how much she loved helping others—especially spending time with her nan, pop, and their friends. She resisted at first (because what teen takes their mum’s advice?), but when she discovered OT blended creativity and science, two of her favourite things, everything clicked.

Growing up in Ouyen, Bel never imagined returning to rural life. But after studying in the city, she realised small towns and community care has her heart. “I took a job in Robinvale, loved the work, but wanted a bigger team. SCHS gave me that—and this year marks 20 years!.”

So, what’s kept her inspired all these years?
💬 “People’s lives are more complex now. We used to support mostly older people with basic mobility needs. Now, we see a broader range—chronic illness, mental health challenges, progressive conditions across the adult lifespan. OT has completely transformed.”

From "ramps and rails" to true capacity building, Bel has witnessed and helped shape OT’s growth—from one OT school in Victoria to five. It’s a profession in motion, and she’s proud to be part of it.

One of her most memorable moments?
A simple dementia clock, given to a client. 💬 “It was such a small thing, but it changed their lives. I’ll never forget the hug I got from his wife. That moment still stays with me.”

Now, Bel’s focus is on advancing dementia care through COPE training—bringing her full circle, back to the people who inspired her from the start.

And what would she tell her younger self?
💬 “Be kind. You don’t have to know it all. Keep learning, ask for help, and take it one step at a time.”
