More AAC awareness month motivations! This guy is amazing

It takes two to communicate — one to speak, and one to listen.

This AAC Awareness Month, listen a little longer.

If you want to support AAC users this month and every month, there are a few simple things you can do that make a massive difference. Check out the link to my blog post in the comments.

Our quarterly Team Development day saw us learn more about Key Word Signing, refreshed our understanding of ethics of being a Speech Pathologist, and how body language and movement are a genuine part of our communication.

Hello clients, families, and service supporters

By now most of you would have heard of the disastrous decision by the NDIS to freeze therapy fees for a 6th year in a row. After years of unsuccessful lobbying simply for CPI increases, push has come to shove and we need to take coordinated action. Each year rent, power, wages, and superannuation go up, but our fees don’t. And yet we are also expected to continue to pay for regular auditing, registration, insurances, and professional development.

All therapy providers have only been just making ends meet, and now the industry will be on the brink of collapse. We need your help to tell our politicians to give you and us a fair go, by doing 4 small things – sign these two petitions https://chng.it/DpWWykSxnP and https://chng.it/DpWWykSxnP, forward the petitions to your family and friends, and send an concerning email to our Labour senators (even a small informal one will make a difference!).

Here is some myth busting:

1. $193.99 per hour sounds like you are making top dollar and is borderline fraudulous. WRONG – we need 2 hours to provide this one hour of service, and then we lose another 50% to running costs. We now get paid less than therapists in other departments, teachers, nurses, and some support workers!

2. Therapists set the fee – WRONG, the NDIS sets this fee, completely off their own bat, using their own bean counters. There is no consultation with the industry, so we must call this what it is - conflict of interest. It is a political decision. Other funding bodies such as Workcover Qld have kept up with CPI, so why can’t the NDIS!?!?

3. We all need to share the burden of a tough economic outlook – sure, but you can bet there will be less and less therapists providing services in the near future, and those that are left will be dangerously unsupervised without grounding in evidence based practice.

In addition to the relative dollar wage cuts, our physio friends have been dealt a real wage cut, and travel fees are slashed by half. The significance is of this is the raw physio deal means that there is further disparity within the broken industry. And with travel fees slashed, most home visits are going be aborted, so now you can start to see how this will negatively affect not just Providers, but Participants too. Imagine our regional friends and families dealing with that!!!

So the impact to you, the Participants is – a serious threat of reduced quality of service, less services, likely cutback on travel services, and the possible introduction of a gap fee (to match Workcover Qld prices).

Sorry to blow your day, but action is needed now. This new price guide is effective 1.7.25, in just 2 weeks! Stand up with your Providers and make a noise. In the old days we would have gone on strike, but this is not a reality in this market, and is unfair to you. The NDIS is good a pitting Participants, Providers, and the general public against each other, but it is becoming clearer who the real bad guys are.

If you need to clarify or discuss any of these matters further, please contact me at darren@aacspeechsolutions.com.au
