Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day occurs every October. Parents and families across Australia have the opportunity to honor their babies who passed away from stillbirth, miscarriage or postnatal causes.

Every October 15th, Australian bereaved parents will pause to remember their babies who’ve died, joining families from the United States, Canada, Norway, Italy and Kenya in observing International Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

This annual day of remembrance is a significant one on Sands’ calendar, honoring the approximately 106,000 thousand babies who lose their lives to miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death each year.
On the evening of the 15th the International 'Wave of Light' occurs at 7pm, where bereaved parents and their families light candles in remembrance.

“Parents consistently tell us that opportunities to acknowledge their baby’s life and to simply say their name are so meaningful to them and their families,” said Sands’ Chief Executive Officer, Jackie Mead.

“We know that recognising and validating bereaved parents’ experiences and honoring their grief helps families cope with and adjust to life without their baby as best they can,” she said.

“International Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day is a powerful opportunity to do so as a community, whilst also encouraging more public conversations about what are still quite taboo topics.”

LIPTEMBER | Whats it all about?

Liptember raises funds and promotes awareness for women's mental health for the whole of September. All funds raised are given to the Centre for Women's Health and Lifeline.

A campaign dedicated to raising funds and awareness for women's mental health, harnessing the true potential of the collective, encouraging and inspiring people to listen, share, and learn.

Helping start the conversation off, by popping a little colour on; individuals are encouraged to register online and seek sponsorship from family, friends and co-workers for committing to wear the lippy throughout September.

Funds raised during the month of September are donated to the Centre for Women’s Mental Health, Lifeline, Batyr, The Jean Hailes Foundation, The Pretty Foundation and The Magpie Nest Women's Program.

In the past, the majority of mental health research has been focused on men, with the findings applied to women. This has resulted in a number of programs and prevention strategies that are unable to fully assist the mental health needs of the female population. The Liptember campaign hopes to change that.

By placing a gender lens on mental health, research has shown to be more accurate and support programs more effective.
