Old age doesn't automatically equate to poor health—it's a myth. While aging may increase the likelihood of health issues, it doesn't mean you can't take preventive measures for a healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and injuries.

Recent studies reveal that half of the physical decline associated with old age is due to a lack of physical activity. Engaging in regular exercise, even for individuals over 50, provides cardiovascular benefits and contributes to a longer life.

The saying "use it or lose it" holds true, so it's important to stay active, even if mobility decreases with age. While regaining lost skills may be challenging, it's never impossible. It's never too late to prioritise fitness and physical well-being, as it plays a vital role in longevity.

Today marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a crucial opportunity for communities worldwide to gain a deeper understanding of the abuse and neglect faced by older individuals. It is disheartening that 600,000 or 14.8% of older Australians experience elder abuse each year, encompassing various forms such as physical, social, financial, psychological, and sexual mistreatment, as well as neglect.

Respecting and honouring our elders should be an inherent courtesy within all of us. Basic acts of grace and manners involve treating elders with dignity and respect. Unfortunately, these fundamental values have been largely forgotten in today's society.

If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, please reach out to the national Elder Help Line at 1800 353 374. In case of an emergency, contact emergency services at Triple 000.

Celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14, 2023!

Every blood or plasma donation is a precious gift that saves lives. By giving blood or plasma regularly, you can help build a safe and sustainable blood supply. Access to secure blood and plasma donations is crucial for patients with conditions like sickle-cell anemia, thalassemia, haemophilia, and immune deficiencies. However, many countries struggle to meet the demand for blood and ensure its quality and safety, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

The World Health Organization aims to improve availability and quality by optimising plasma utilisation and increasing access to life-saving plasma protein therapies. This year's campaign focuses on giving blood and plasma regularly to share life and create a reliable global supply. Join the movement to thank donors, encourage new donors, prioritize donor health and care, and ensure universal access to safe blood products.

Together, we can make a difference.

The transition to an aged care home can be a time filled with stress, intense emotions, and uncertainty for both the individual moving and their family, friends, and caregivers. It is a decision that carries significant challenges and emotional weight.

There are certain signs that indicate the person you care for could benefit from moving into an aged care home. These signs include:

1. Experiencing significant difficulties with mobility.
2. Dealing with significant incontinence issues.
3. Exhibiting challenging behaviours like physical aggression.
4. Facing significant communication problems.
5. Struggling with difficulties in thinking, planning, and remembering.

Even if moving to an aged care home is agreed upon as the best option, as a caregiver, you may encounter unsettling issues. There will be changes in your routine and lifestyle. Feelings of guilt and concerns about the decisions made may arise. You may also miss the companionship, although simultaneously experiencing relief in sharing the caregiving role.

The Find Aged Care system makes this process as easy as possible for all involved, to learn more visit www.findagedcare.com.au

Starting July 1, 2023, it will be mandatory for approved providers to have at least one Registered Nurse (RN) present and on duty 24/7 at each residential facility they operate. This requirement stems from the findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, which emphasised the crucial role of staffing levels in maintaining the quality of residential care.

Having an RN on-site round the clock minimises the risk of harm to residents by ensuring the availability of qualified and experienced care staff who can promptly identify and address potential risks. This responsibility not only enhances resident safety but also improves access to care within the facilities. Key benefits of this requirement include:

1. RNs can effectively manage certain issues as first responders.
2. Enhanced resident safety due to the presence of skilled and knowledgeable RNs.
3. Reduced need for unnecessary trips to hospital emergency rooms, leading to more efficient use of healthcare resources.
