Censorship...
I submitted this painting to the Harris Museum & Art Gallery open exhibition many moons ago, the painting was rejected due to it not being family friendly, I informed the curator that all families are born through the yoni portal and my painting was much more appropriate than the guns and war pieces on display. Even still the painting was not allowed to be included. Later that day I was speaking to my university lecturer Justine Flynn who is an incredibly inspiring artist, she looked me dead in the eye and said βwell I hope you are going to walk in there with your painting strapped to your back on the opening night. This had not occurred to me and it lit a fire inside of me. I went home and cut the straps from an old back pack, I stapled them to my painting and on the opening night of the exhibition I walked up the steps of the Harris Museum with my painting proudly strapped to my back, I walked in and stood in the centre of the exhibition hall, fully expecting to be asked to leave, however an hour later I was still standing there. People thought I was an installation piece and they were walking around me talking about the painting, it was so interesting to hear different peoples opinions of the artwork and I was so happy that my painting was a part of the exhibition. Once the evening was coming to an end I calmly left. How many museums are filled with nudes of women painted and sculpted by men? Yet when a woman depicts the glorious yoni portal from which we are all born, it is censored, we need to see more paintings made by women in these museums, we experience things that men do not and our artwork is worthy of display. Even if your artwork is rejected, you always have the option to strap it to your back and display it anywhere you choose!
