Clare Lane, Midwife in Private Practice www.clareandnicmidwives.com
Clare provides private midwife services - home birth & hospital support, includes pregnancy, birth and post birth care.

We are absolutely privileged to share the birthing journey's of women and their families and love what we do. See our website - www.clareandnicmidwives.com

Clare provides midwifery care throughout the pregnancy, labour, birth and until the baby is 6 weeks old. Clare is a Medicare eligible midwife and offer Medicare rebates for pregnancy & post birth care. At Clare & Nic midwives, we believe that

pregnancy; labour and birth are normal physiological processes. This process is a normal part of family life, a powerful social and emotional life passage/event. In keeping with this belief, we do not routinely interfere with the normal process. Clare & the midwives who work with Clare & Nic Midwives support women (this includes their partners & family) during this time working in partnership with them. A partnership evolved over time, which involves mutual trust and respect, knowledge and skill sharing. We share our midwifery knowledge and skills, and women share their knowledge of their bodies, birthing and family histories with us. We trust that women’s bodies know what to do and women in turn, trust our professional judgment. In this way, we work with women to achieve safe and satisfying outcomes for both mother and baby. That is, a healthy mother who has had a positive birth experience, who thus, feels empowered and well prepared for motherhood and a healthy baby who is surrounded by family love from the beginning. Being a midwife, Clare endeavours to update her knowledge and skills by attending regular midwifery education workshops, attending conferences and using current evidence within my practice. Clare currently use the ACM guidelines for consultation and referral during pregnancy and is familiar with the NICE guidelines and the Victorian Three Centres Consensus guidelines for antenatal care. Clare specialises in supporting the physiological birth process with minimal intervention to obtain a safe and optimal birth experience. Nic is not currently working as a midwife but is supporting the practice in an administrative role. We highly recommend and support water immersion and water birth. We practice holistically, utilising homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy, aromatherapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and acupressure techniques

What happens if my baby has a cord around their neck!?

A nuchal cord is a common occurrence. 1/3 of babies are born with a cord around their neck. We simply unwrap it, or loosen it for the baby to go thru it, rarely a cord will be quite tight and it can prevent the baby from coming after the head and may require a little more work or in extreme situations, cutting the cord immediately. It’s more common for babies with long cords to have at least one wrap, sometimes multiple wraps around the neck . It is considered to be a safeguard, if the cord is wrapped around the neck, that would prevent it from coming ahead of the baby.
The normal, healthy umbilical cord is filled with Wharton’s jelly, a soft, gelatinous substance which protects the vessels inside the cord to prevent any disruption in the blood supply during pregnancy or labor.

Thank you for all the lovely comments about the induction info we’ve been sharing. I’m sorry that we can’t respond to all the comments and questions that we get sent, but if you’re looking for information on induction (or other birth-related topics, come to that), there’s loads on sarawickham.com And I have written a book about induction of labour if you would find that useful.

I also want to re-share this important thought. When it comes to making decisions about things like induction of labour, it’s not that people are trying to persuade women to say no. It’s about trying to make sure that women have all the information they need to decide whether a particular path is right for them.

As recent research has again confirmed, many women who have induction and similar interventions during their births later wish that they had been told more about what it had involved and about what it would mean for them and their family.

Some are very happy with their decision but others are not.

We need to help more women to get all the information they need to make the decisions that are right for them.

As we remember the babies who have died in the womb, who are born still or have died in infancy, there will be a service held at the Melbourne Museum on Tuesday 15th October, for all those who wish to attend. Please click on the link to register.

If you have been affected by pregnancy and infant loss, you are warmly invited to attend a special memorial service at Melbourne Museum on 15 October.

This is a chance for bereaved parents, their families and friends to come together and honour the precious babies whose lives were too short.

This free, child-friendly event is proudly supported by the Victorian Government and Safer Care Victoria.

Tea and coffee will be provided after the service. Please register to attend by 11 October.
