Are you feeling uncertain about the changes coming with Thriving Kids? If you are, you’re not alone. The way support is delivered is shifting.

More and more, children who may have previously been seen in therapy settings will be supported within everyday environments like childcare, schools and community settings.

This means the adults around the child will play an even bigger role in understanding development and communication.

Over the past 12 months, the My Therapy House team has been working closely with Michele Ricamato, and it has had a significant impact on how we understand and support communication in our work.

In November, we’re hosting a 2-day training event in Adelaide with Michele to share this approach more broadly with a wider audience, welcoming anyone who works with children the opportunity to attend.

This training event will cover ways to understand where a child is at, what to focus on next, and how to support them in real, everyday moments - not just in a therapeutic setting.

So instead of feeling uncertain about what’s coming, we hope to make you feel more prepared, more confident, and better equipped to support children in a way that is meaningful and sustainable.

This is the direction the sector is moving, and while it may feel unfamiliar, the question is whether we feel ready to meet it.

We hope you'll join us: https://usefull.com.au/event/rethinking-communication-assessments?source=facebook

My Therapy House is a neurodiversity-affirming practice, where we acknowledge and celebrate the fact that everyone’s brain develops differently and that we each experience the world in our own unique way.

Throughout our practice we draw on neuroaffirming approaches such as DIRFloortime® to focus on creating an accepting and inclusive environment that builds upon the interests, strengths and needs of the children we support.

At My Therapy House we believe there is a place for everyone ❤️

Children are like nature — each one unfolds in their own time, in their own way.
Some bloom early.
Some grow slowly, quietly, beneath the surface.
Some bend with the wind.
Some need more sun, more space, more shelter.
But none are wrong for growing differently.
Like nature, children are not meant to be rushed, forced, or compared.
They need safety, connection, and trust to become who they already are.
Our role is not to shape them into what we expect,
but to notice who they are,
protect what is tender,
and create the conditions for them to flourish ❤️🌼❤️

We’ve been having a lot of conversations lately about how communication is understood, especially for children whose communication and development aren’t easily captured through traditional approaches.

Many assessments rely on children sitting, attending and responding on cue. But for many children, communication looks different. It shows up through movement, behaviour, emotion, play and connection.

In November, we’ll be hosting a 2-day intensive training in Adelaide with Michele Ricamato that explores a different way of understanding communication.

This training is for anyone supporting a child, including speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, educators, childcare workers, support workers, and parents.

It’s especially valuable for those supporting children who are non speaking, minimally speaking, or who find it hard to engage in structured assessments.

Across the two days, you’ll explore how communication actually develops, what to look for beyond words and behaviours, and how to understand a child through regulation, connection, shared attention and shared meaning.

You’ll gain clarity on where a child is developmentally and what to focus on next, so you can support children in a way that is practical, respectful and neuroaffirming.
Most importantly, you’ll leave with a clear direction, so you’re not guessing or feeling stuck, but able to move forward with confidence in your everyday work with children.

Early bird pricing is currently available until the end of April. If this feels relevant to you, you can find more details here: https://usefull.com.au/event/rethinking-communication-assessments?source=facebook

April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to pause and recognise and value autistic individuals for who they are.

At My Therapy House, we hold a deep belief that there is a place in the world for everyone. Our work is grounded in a neuroaffirming approach, where we focus on emotional safety, connection, and understanding each child’s unique way of communicating and being, rather than trying to change them.

We recognise this month as an opportunity to reflect and learn, while also holding the intention that this understanding extends beyond April.

Our goal is not for neurodivergence to stand out as something separate, but to be recognised as a natural and valued part of human diversity, something we honour and support every day of the year.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is currently reviewing and collating information about different therapeutic approaches, including which approaches may be included and supported into the future.

A group of DIR Floortime therapists has prepared an evidence based paper outlining why DIR Floortime is a neuroaffirming, developmentally grounded approach that supports children and families in a meaningful and respectful way. The paper highlights the evidence for DIR Floortime, its efficacy, and its focus on building on each child’s strengths through a family centred and child centred model of care.

This work reflects a broader understanding of communication and development. One that recognises the importance of regulation, connection, shared attention, and relationships as the foundation for growth, rather than focusing only on surface level skills or isolated behaviours.

The paper is being shared for review and signatures as part of this process.

Submissions are due by March 29th.

If you are interested in reading the paper and adding your support, please message me and I will send it to you.

Thank you.
