I haven't posted much lately, but this week, and especially today, is special.😊

On Tuesday 13 October, 2015 I taught my first public yoga class, having completed my yoga teacher training on 5 September. I hired the conference room at a Mitchelton psychology practice for two classes a week - Tuesdays at 6am and Wednesdays at 7pm.

Come winter, the 6am class fizzled, and not being a morning person, I wasn't exactly devastated. 😆 Two changes of venue and 10 years later, Wednesday night yoga is still going in Mitchelton! 🎉

Other classes came and went along the way, fitting them in with my part time job. I had an enduring stint teaching with YogaSol at Ferny Hills for 7 years, and I'm pleased to say many of the yogis who attended my regular classes there, continue practising with me today at Mitchelton and Bunya.

In 2020, mid pandemic, I left the security (and stress) of my part time job, which it turned out to be one of the best decisions ever, and I've been fortunate to be solely teaching yoga ever since. I've delivered classes in community centres, studios, gyms, on site for corporate and private clients and aged care residents, and of course, via Zoom. Who ever could have anticipated that would be a thing?!! 😆

Initially trained in Vinyasa, I've taught Hot Vinyasa, Power, Restorative, Yin, Chair Yoga and now mostly teach my favourite, Jo's Special Blend! 🧘🏻‍♀️

It's been the most fantastic 10 years and I've found my niche teaching delightfully average people with niggly backs, cranky shoulders, dicky knees, vertigo etc... and I couldn't be happier. 😁

My deepest gratitude goes to those who trust me to guide them through the practice of yoga, week in and week out, without whom I wouldn't have reached this milestone. Thank YOU. It continues to be a deep honour and privilege to share the practice and benefits of yoga with you. 🙏🏻

Thanks also to my long-suffering, supportive husband💗 who is so happy I finally found 'my thing' and to all of my teachers.

Here's a little trip down memory lane, from just after I graduated Level 1 Yoga Teacher Training, to more recent times. 😊

Wednesday night Flow classes are paused while I'm on holiday. Flow class will return on Wednesday 24 September. 😊

Monday and Thursday morning classes continue in my absence, with wonderful guest teachers. 🧘‍♀️

I was fortunate to spend yesterday with one of my teachers, the wonderful Julie Smerdon Yoga, and a bunch of other beautiful yogis. 🙏

Surrounded by trees and the chatter of birds, with periods of sunshine and rain taking turns, we practised yoga asana, talked about all manner of things (yoga and not-yoga) over lunch, then turned our discussion and practice to meditation in the afternoon.

I'm looking forward to sharing some of what we practised yesterday with students in my classes. Thank you Julie. 💙

Reminder, there's no Beginners class at Kakowan tomorrow but Beginners Plus will be on at 9.30am Thursday at Our Lady of Dolours, Mitchelton as normal.

How cute is Dora's Easter latte art on one lucky yogi's coffee after class at Kakowan Community Facility Bunya last Monday! She's so talented and makes an excellent brew, every time. 🙌🏻

Breaking...

This is great news for those who already know and experience the health benefits of yoga, and those who are yet to do so. Hopefully private health insurers come to the party.

When I first started yoga, I thought it would lead me to enlightenment. Spoiler alert: enlightenment didn’t happen, but I can now sit through Thanksgiving dinner without losing my mind. 🤯

Let’s face it—every family has its quirks. The term dysfunctional family feels redundant, doesn’t it? 🙃

But here’s the kicker: the things about our parents that drive us up the wall? Those same traits are often lurking in us. Ouch. 😬 My dad had a temper that could light up the whole room—and guess what? I’ve had to work hard not to let that fire take over my own life.

The flip side? The good stuff they’ve passed down is in us, too. My dad also had a heart of gold. 💛 He used to make me deliver the Sunday newspaper to our elderly neighbor every week. That legacy of kindness is something I’m proud to carry forward.

And while we can’t change the DNA or the quirks we’ve inherited, we can change how we show up in the world. 🌟

The Practice:

1️⃣ Pause to Reflect
Stop living on autopilot. Create space—whether it’s on a park bench, your couch, or a yoga mat—to notice your thoughts and emotions. Yoga and meditation give you that sacred pause. 🧘

2️⃣ Daily Check-In
Start each morning by reflecting on yesterday. What thoughts or behaviors are worth keeping? What needs to go? 🌱 You’re the gardener of your mind.

3️⃣ Nurture the Good, W**d the Rest
You’ve inherited some beautiful traits—lean into those. But just because your dad lost his cool doesn’t mean you have to. We can plant what we love and compost the rest. 🌸

4️⃣ A One-Breath Pause
In real-time, commit to pausing before reacting. Bring forward the you that you like—the one who reflects, breathes, and chooses peace. 🌬️

5️⃣ Upgrade Your Software
You are not stuck. Your traits aren’t hardware; they’re software you can rewrite. 💾 Don’t ever say, “This is just who I am.” Growth is always an option.

Thanks, Mom and Dad, for the good, the bad, and the in-between. I’m steering my ship now—and making change apparent every day. 🚀
