🌿 Mental Wellness Month | 1–31 January 🌿

January isn’t about fixing what’s “wrong” — it’s about strengthening what supports you.

Unlike Mental Health Month in October, Mental Wellness Month focuses on proactive self-care, emotional resilience, and building steady foundations for the year ahead. It’s about what we practise before things feel overwhelming — not only when we’re in crisis.

Mental wellness can look like:

Creating routines that support your nervous system

Noticing early signs of stress and responding sooner

Building coping strategies before burnout sets in

Practising rest, boundaries, and self-compassion without guilt

Checking in with yourself instead of pushing through

You don’t need a diagnosis to prioritise your wellbeing.
You don’t need to be struggling to deserve support.
Small, consistent steps create meaningful change.

As we move through January, let this be a reset rooted in intentional care, not pressure or perfection.

Your mental wellness is something you build, protect, and grow — all year long 💛

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) can develop following prolonged, repeated, or interpersonal trauma — particularly in situations where a person had little control or ability to escape.

C-PTSD affects how the nervous system detects and responds to threat. People may experience difficulties with emotional regulation, sense of self, trust and relationships, memory, and daily functioning. Triggers can activate survival responses such as fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown, even when danger is no longer present.

C-PTSD is not a sign of weakness, not an overreaction, and not something a person can simply “push through.” These responses reflect a nervous system that adapted to survive.

At Thrive in Thought Therapy, we provide trauma-informed, neuro-affirming support that prioritises safety, stabilisation, and capacity building. Our approach supports individuals to better understand their nervous system and develop skills to improve functioning and quality of life over time.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that affects how a person processes information, experiences sensory input, communicates, and regulates emotions. Autism presents differently in every individual, which is why it is described as a spectrum.

Autistic people may experience differences in communication, social interaction, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and daily functioning. Sensory overwhelm can lead to meltdowns or shutdowns, which are responses to stress — not behaviour choices.

Autism is not caused by parenting, not a result of trauma, and not something that needs to be fixed. With the right understanding and supports, autistic individuals can thrive.

At Thrive in Thought Therapy, we use a neuro-affirming, strengths-based and trauma-informed approach. Our focus is on reducing barriers, building capacity, and supporting meaningful participation in daily life — in ways that respect each person’s identity and needs.

🧠 Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a neurological condition that affects how the brain sends, receives, and processes signals to the body. While brain scans and medical tests may appear “normal,” the symptoms experienced are very real and can significantly impact daily functioning.

People with FND may experience symptoms such as non-epileptic seizures, changes in movement or coordination, weakness, sensory changes, speech difficulties, fatigue, pain, and cognitive challenges. Symptoms can fluctuate and may be influenced by stress, illness, trauma, or nervous system overload.

FND is not psychological, not imagined, and not a person’s fault. It reflects a disruption in nervous system functioning rather than damage to the brain itself.

Support for FND focuses on helping the nervous system regain stability through education, regulation strategies, skill development, and consistent, trauma-informed care. With the right supports, many people can improve their functioning and quality of life.

At Thrive in Thought Therapy, we provide neuro-affirming, evidence-informed support to help individuals better understand their nervous system and build capacity over time.

✨ Human Rights Day — 10th December

Tomorrow we honour Human Rights Day — the day the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, establishing that everyone, everywhere is entitled to dignity, respect, equality and inclusion.

At Thrive in Thought Therapy, we believe that human rights include having access to safe, affirming, and empowering supports — especially for people living with disability. Through the NDIS, Australians have the right to supports that promote choice, control, dignity, inclusion, and wellbeing.

🌱 On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to:

centre the voices, needs and choices of people with disability;

champion dignity, respect and equality in every interaction;

work toward a community where everyone feels included, supported and valued;

Because human rights aren’t just ideals — they are everyday actions.

💙 To all our clients, carers, families and allies: you matter. Your voice matters. Your rights matter.

Thank-You to everyone for our August round for donations to legacy!

Throughout August we raised $64 for legacy Southern Highlands, to support the work they do for our local veterans and their families.

Bonnie and Paul work tirelessly for their legatees throughout the district, and we are thankful for the amazing support they provide.

Let’s see if we can top September with a bigger donation to a fantastic charity!
