I regularly have these conversations:

Can’t do something? What’s a step before that?

Can’t keep up with washing? Wear clothes an extra day, give everyone their own basket so if clothes aren’t put away they are still together.

Can’t put a boundary in at work or home? What’s a step towards that that you are comfortable with?

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, and the ones filling in for mums. Thinking of all the people who find this day hard, the ones who’ve lost their mums, lost their children, have a difficult relationship, or couldn’t be a mum when they wanted to be.

When a child is learning something new, your encouragement is the most important help you can give them. We do it in sport, but so often we can’t do it for children learning an art - how many children have been told to stop singing and mouth the words?

I’ve been an artist all my life, from when I had no skill as a very small child I was captivated. Maybe because I grew up in an artistic family, or was surrounded by adults who understood, I was always encouraged. My worst critic was me, comparing myself to my older sisters and mum.

So many people told me how talented I was, I believed them, their comments (and some purchases) made me keep going. Gifts were accepted with love. Nowadays I cringe at the thought of how awful some of them were.

What would I have been passionate about if I didn’t have all the praise and encouragement by to continue with art and woodwork? I am grateful that I didn’t lose my passion for creativity, it has kept me going through the toughest times.
