Calmbirth is a childbirth education program that was developed to re-educate and re-empower women about the natural process of birth. Calmbirth strives to educate women and their partners about the amazing abilities of their bodies to give birth. Through this education comes a trust and a faith in their bodies allowing for an amazing birth experience. We believe that when we learn how to embrace birth as a natural part of life & not fear it, then the way we experience and talk about birth will positively affect future generations.

Amazing!

A hospital in New York welcomed a 4lb baby and a 13lb baby just hours from each other.

2 babies on the opposite ends of size.

Our bodies are pretty incredible.

And babies can be born in all shapes and sizes!

I’ll never forget my colleague asking how my holiday was when I returned back at work from maternity leave

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from becoming someone new while keeping a tiny human alive.

And yet so many mothers minimise it, and society grooms new parents that this transition happens seamlessly. As if nothing changed at all.

But early motherhood is not small work.

It is physical recovery.
Hormonal rollercoaster.
Identity shift.
Nervous system stretch.
Relationship renegotiation.
Around the clock nourishment.

It is a complete transition and brain software upgrade.

If you are in this season, your only real job is to recover, bond, feed your baby and become.

Go gently.

Everything else can wait.

If you have a mum friend parenting in that first year, send this to her.

Let her know you see her

Babies are Mammals – I can’t emphasise this point enough, and when you truly accept this, the newborn parenting phase becomes sooo much easier.
Our new born babies are just tiny little bundles of instincts and reflexes. They have been born into a world full of unfamiliar smells, tastes and sounds, and they have to breathe and feed without any help from the placenta!!
Is it any wonder that they are happiest skin to skin with the people whose voices they know and the steady thump, thump, thump of a heart beat.
The most Australian of all mammals, kangaroos and koalas keep their babies in their pouch where they feed and sleep all day long, and truly our babies would happily do that too if we had the equipment!
So, the next best thing is keep your baby snuggled up with one of you most of the time in those early weeks, even when they aren’t feeding. In a baby carrier, or in your arms, that is where they will be most content for those early weeks.
Don’t beat yourself up about “not getting anything done”, because truly you are doing the most important job of all, you are nourishing and emotionally regulating the next generation, and trust me, nothing is more important!
I promise they will sleep by themselves eventually, but in those early days, go with your baby’s mammalian rhythms and life will be easier for all of you!

Postpartum is a rollercoaster.

One minute you’re overflowing with love… the next you’re crying in the shower wondering who you even are anymore.
Joy. Gratitude. Exhaustion. Doubt. Fierce protectiveness. Loneliness. Bliss. Overwhelm.
Sometimes all before 9am.

Nothing has gone wrong.
Nothing is “wrong” with you.

You have birthed a baby — and a whole new version of yourself.

Your hormones are shifting. Your body is healing. Your nervous system is recalibrating. Your identity is expanding. That’s a lot for one heart to hold.

Go gently.
Speak kindly to yourself.
Lower the bar.
Rest when you can.
Ask for help.
Cry if you need.
Soak in the magic when it comes.

Postpartum isn’t meant to be rushed through or powered through. It’s meant to be softened into.

Be as compassionate with yourself as you are with your baby.

If someone planning a homebirth makes you nervous or uncomfortable, pause before you speak.

Discomfort doesn’t automatically mean danger. Often it just means you’re bumping up against a story you were told about birth, women’s bodies, and who gets to be in control.

Planned homebirth is not reckless.

It’s a considered healthcare choice made with skilled professionals, screening, and clear plans - and the evidence tells us that for low-risk pregnancies, home is the safest place to birth.

Fear-based comments don’t protect women... in fact, they undermine confidence when it matters most!

You don’t need to agree with someone’s birth choices. If it’s not what you’d personally choose, that’s OK. You’re not being forced to have a homebirth! You don’t need to understand them fully. But you do need to respect that they’ve done the work to decide what feels right for their body and their baby.

If you’re unsure what to say, try listening and offering support instead of discouragement.

Because pregnant women don’t need managing.
They need backing.
