Our amazing Nurses in Action volunteers recently held a Mini Med Camp, focusing on children’s health and wellbeing.

With a dentist and clinical officer on site, our volunteers assessed 166 children, providing treatment, health education and essential hygiene supplies like toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap.

Conditions treated included:

💙 ringworm
💙 tinea
💙 malaria
💙 shingles
💙 upper respiratory tract infection (URTI)
💙 headache
💙 allergies
💙 dental cavities
💙 rotten teeth
💙 urgent dental referrals

But beyond treating illness, this camp also creates lasting change! Health education empowers children and families to take charge of their wellbeing every day. Early detection and treatment reduce serious complications, helping prevent avoidable hospital visits and improving long-term health outcomes. And of course, building trust and connection within the community strengthens access to healthcare and encourages healthier habits for the future.

Feeling inspired to make a difference? There are still last minute spots open for 2025! Or, start planning ahead for 2026! Join us and be part of a life changing experience that truly matters.

Our Nurses in Action volunteers recently spent time on placement in remote Kenya, where access to healthcare is limited and the need is high. They provided hands-on care in the community - supporting local health teams, treating patients and lending their skills where it mattered most.

It’s clear their presence made an impact.

And just like that, another Nurses in Action Program has started! Another group of NIA volunteers have landed in Kenya, ready to begin their journey. During orientation, they took part in what's become a traditional NIA hippo tour and visited the Aga Khan Hospital - two incredible experiences that set the scene for what’s to come. We can’t wait to see the impact they’ll have and the memories they’ll make over the coming weeks. Stay tuned as we follow their journey!

Our volunteers are one of a kind, dedicating their time to helping others, utilising their skills for good. Past Nurses In Action volunteer Felicity, who recently travelled with us has captured exactly the type of people who our volunteers are perfectly, with sentimental tribute to her fellow volunteers upon the completion of their program, and we couldn't have said it better ourselves:

"With my flight back to Australia looming there's a few things I needed to say.

I've spent most of my life hearing about a certain kind of person. I learnt to seek them out, hoping that maybe one day I would be one.

They were the kind of person whose beauty goes beyond the physical, whose light shone so bright and so strong that it overflowed into their work and the people they impacted.

They walked against the crowd, seeing the bad in the world and tried to fix it.

They gave their time, their energy, their minds and their hearts to what they believed in.

I am so proud and so grateful to get to say that i have spent this last month living with, learning from and working next to these kinds of people.
Thank you girls for being yourselves, for getting up everyday and doing your best, for always bringing love and compassion to your work no matter what the day before had thrown at you.

Thank you Mama Ann staff and the numerous community health volunteers whose passion and dedication to their community left me in awe day after day.

Thank you to everyone who donated. Your money went towards keeping the hospital functioning, the medical camps we ran, the free health care we were able to provide and to finishing the connection of the solar panels at the hospital so that their is access to electricity over night.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has contributed to me being me. All my friends and family who have shaped me and helped me channel my abundance of energy and spirit into something constructive that I can be proud of."

Thank you Felicity, and fellow volunteers for your dedication to creating positive change around the world 💙

Still want to see the world this year and make a real difference while you're at it?

If you're a nurse, midwife or healthcare professional looking to do something meaningful in 2025, this is your chance. We have a few last-minute spots available for our October Nurses In Action program in Kenya, and we’re calling on those ready to step up, give back and experience something truly life-changing.

💙 Deliver hands-on healthcare to people who need it most
💙 Educate and empower local communities
💙 Work alongside passionate professionals from around the world
💙 Be part of a movement that’s creating real, lasting change
💙 You’ll leave a mark, not just on the lives you touch, but on your own.

This isn’t just about travel. It’s about connection, impact and purpose. It’s about using your skills to make the world a little fairer.

“He seemed fine.”
“I didn’t know he was struggling.”
“I wish I had checked in.”

Too many of us have heard (or said) these words.

This Men’s Health Week, we’re reminded that mental health is just as important as physical health. And yet, for so many men - especially those in healthcare - stress, burnout and emotional fatigue are worn silently.

In a culture that tells men to tough it out, checking in can be life-changing. Here’s how you can make a difference:
🧡 Make time for a genuine conversation - even a quick chat over a coffee can help them open up
🧡 Ask twice rather than just asking how they are - follow up and say “are you really okay?”
🧡 Listen without judgement
🧡 Follow up - regular support can make a big difference.

Normalise the conversation. Talk about mental health the same way you’d talk about physical health.

At Healthcare Heartbeat, we see the pressure our healthcare workers carry every day. That’s why we’re committed to creating spaces where frontline professionals - men included - feel supported, seen and safe to speak up.

Don’t wait - ask today. You never know the difference it might make.

As healthcare professionals, you spend your days caring for others but YOUR wellbeing matters too.

This Mindful in May, we’re sharing three simple strategies to help you pause, reset and protect your mental fitness, thanks to Healthcare Heartbeat:

1. Box Breathing - A technique used by first responders to manage stress and improve focus.

👉 Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4.
It takes less than a minute and can be done at the nurses' station, in your car, or on the go.

2. Step Outside Without Your Phone
After a shift, take a quiet moment - no screens, just your breath and surroundings. These small breaks help your nervous system recharge and improve clarity.

3. Access Practical Support
Through a Healthcare Heartbeat Pulse Membership, healthcare teams can access flexible, tailored wellbeing programs - from self-care packages and retreats to meal delivery and mental fitness training.

Thanks to Healthcare Heartbeat for encouraging all of us to take a moment for ourselves this May. Because small steps can make a big difference.

This ANZAC Day, we reflect on the courage, compassion and unwavering spirit of the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) nurses who served in World War II. Over 5,000 women cared for the wounded across battlefields in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Pacific - often under unimaginable conditions.

Among them was Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the Bangka Island massacre, who went on to continue her nursing career and advocate for veterans. Her story, like so many others, speaks to a deep sense of service and resilience.

The same values - bravery, compassion and a commitment to care - live on in our Nurses in Action volunteers today. Whether supporting communities in Kenya, Uganda or Nepal, they bring the same dedication and heart that defined our ANZAC nurses generations ago.

Today, we honour their legacy and those who continue to carry it forward.

Lest we forget.
