WHAT IS YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE?

Understanding our love language helps us express what we need to feel: love, appreciation, and stability.

Understanding someone's love language helps create meaningful and more fulfilling relationships.

And guess what? This isn't just for grown-ups – it's the same with our children.

Learning their unique love language lets us connect with them in the most meaningful way, creating bonds that last a lifetime.

CHRISTMAS/ NEW YEAR CLINIC CLOSURE
REOPENING 7th FEBRUARY 2024

2023 has been a BIG year!! For everyone - for our team and our clients. To help us all refresh and come back with lots of energy and enthusiasm to keep kicking therapeutic goals with our young people, we are taking a little break over the Christmas/New Year period.

While we are all looking forward to this break, we also can't wait to see your smiling faces when we return on 7th February 2024. We would like to wish all our amazing children and their families, a wonderful Christmas, and a fun filled school holiday break.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

The school holidays are a perfect storm for meltdowns and tantrums. This can be VERY frustrating for parents when they are simply trying to create happy memories for their children.

WHY?
This time of year, is filled with changes to routine, paired with LOTS of extra stimulation (sugary treats, bustling from activity to activity with lots of people/sounds/lights, and running on the "anticipation high" for Santa or ripping open presents on Christmas morning), and then top it off with an underdeveloped brain - and boom!!! A perfect cocktail for emotional dysregulation.

The part of the brain involved in filtering and sorting sensory stimulation, the hypothalamus, is highly underdeveloped in children - all those Christmas lights, extended family members they haven’t seen in months, and the sugary Christmas treats cause the brain to go into overwhelm. Then, the icing on the cake, the part of the brain involved in emotion regulation, the pre-frontal cortex, is also highly underdeveloped in children, which is why children - especially young children - lose it so easily.

TIPS

Re-examine what is important - it's about the quality time we give our kids that makes these school holidays special - not the 30 Christmas themed activities carefully planned after hours of searching Facebook parenting groups.

Allow for space for meltdowns - expect them. The minute we realize that these behaviours are normal - to be expected - you will become less reactive.

Give your children as much routine as possible - they thrive when given consistency.

Help your child co-regulate by using your presence and calm to reset their distressed brain. Do this by:

1) Regulating yourself and being calm
2) Get close
3) Make eye contact
4) Listen
5) Be curious and seek to understand
6) Show empathy
7) Offer warm affection (e.g., hug, back rub)

HALLOWEEN & CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Halloween is fast approaching - this Tuesday 31st October. Please be accepting of all children who arrive at your front door on Halloween because sometimes they are struggling with hidden challenges and the act of trick or treating doesn't come easily to them. They are thankful in their hearts and minds even if they may not tell you!

CLINIC UPDATE

Welcome to our new information wall. At the clinic as soon as you walk in the door, you are greeted by this colourful and exciting update! Our clever and creative work experience student put this space together for our clients.

On the information wall, we have updated our notice board. This week it focuses on emotional dysregulation and the “arc of a tantrum”. We have also put up a brochure nook, this is a place for parents to read about causes and effects of their children’s behaviour. There are a total of 32 different brochures that are all informational.

Some examples for what the brochure wall holds are, anger- kids work on anger management activities and review tips for coping skills with anger. Self-control- kids learn to reduce stress through the circle of control and other examples.

HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES

Did you know that more than half of the world’s population have experienced a headache in the past year? Headaches are a not only common in adults, but children too. This leads us to the next question, what is a headache? A headache is pain in any region of the head. Many patients are more likely to either experience pain on both sides of the head, pain radiating throughout the entire head, or the discomfort is isolated to part of the head. Another question you may be wondering is, how is a headache different to a migraine? A migraine is classified as a severe and extreme headache. The symptoms from migraines are worse than those of headaches, and may include, nausea, vomiting, and or sensitivity to light and sound.

How to manage a headache and control the symptoms? Headaches are generally prevented by eliminating any possible triggers. Lack of sleep and different types of foods can often trigger headaches. If a headache does occur, try using hot or cold compress, and over the counter medicines like paracetamol and or ibuprofen. There is also different sort of treatments which can help including acupuncture, massages and other therapies.

This is for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, such as from your GP. If you would like to know more about migraines and headaches or would like support with migraine management, contact our friendly team at 1300 738 012.

WELCOME TO THESE LITTLE GUYS

A sensory delight, these fluffy monsters have been a huge hit at the clinic - meet Nimbles the Yeti, Grimbles the Bigfoot, and Trimbles the Goblin. They each come with a set of little affirmation cards. Great for storytelling and can be integrated into endless interventions. They have also taken the role of "therapy buddies", helping clients through sessions. The kids love them. From

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE
We have taken a short break away from the clinic and are looking forward to being back on Monday 23rd January 2023. This time away has helped us refresh, re-energize, and reflect on the Year gone by.

January often brings with it a feeling of change or resolution, inspiring many of us to set ourselves plenty of challenges for the New Year. On the other hand, there are some years we enter into a feeling rather less motivated, struggling to build up any energy or enthusiasm. Whichever of these two categories we fall into, we could be doing ourselves a disservice; either we burn ourselves out by pushing ourselves to the limit, or we feel low because we’ve failed to make the most of what feels like a fresh start.

Instead, this year, we would like to challenge you to “take the pressure off” and “do more of what you love”. What do you think? Will you give it a go?
