Making a Difference – one family at a time 💙

Our Community Immunisation team has been described as “wonderful” and “fabulous”, and we couldn’t agree more.

As part of Patient Experience Week, we’re celebrating teams that have received glowing feedback from our patients.

One busy mum shared: "This service is such a valuable resource for the community. Linda, the nurse, was fabulous – a true asset to Gold Coast Health. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and made the process easy for my children."

This year, Patient Experience Week aligns with World Immunisation Week – the perfect time to recognise the hardworking Community Immunisation team.

A huge thank you to Linda and the entire team for your dedication, compassion, and professionalism. Your work is protecting families across the Gold Coast from serious disease.

“You will be wet, homesick and frightened, but the pride of the fleet will be you.”

Those words set Clinical Nurse and veteran Jannine on a path of service that began in the Royal Australian Navy at just 17 and continues today at Gold Coast Health.

From the challenges of her early life to serving during the first Gulf War, Jannine’s experiences shaped her resilience, compassion and lifelong commitment to others.

As we mark 110 years since Gallipoli, she reflects on unity, courage and those who continue to serve — in uniform and beyond.

Lest we forget.

Tomorrow Arlo turns one 🥳 and he is celebrating at home!

Arlo was born with Hirschsprung disease - a condition that affects approximately one in every 5,000 babies, where nerve cells are missing in a baby's large intestine, resulting in bowel blockage.

Arlo had numerous hospital admissions and surgeries at GCUH over the past year to navigate his diagnosis and took it like a champ. 💪

Pictured here is the adorable little man with his surgeon, Dr Rob, on his discharge day. 🎈

"Dr Rob's commitment to Arlo’s care and the responsibility he took on meant the world to us," mum Tiffany said.

"He made each step, including every operation, feel as reassuring and supported as possible, and for that we are incredibly thankful."

Wishing you the happiest birthday Arlo! 🎂

Thank you to Dr Rob and the incredible team for everything you have done for Arlo and his family. 🥰

In the lead up to Anzac Day, the Creative Health Hub has been busy delivering our annual Poppy Making Program across Gold Coast Health.

This year, more than 60 departments are involved, with staff and consumers creating handmade poppies as a shared moment of creativity, connection and reflection.

📸 Check out the wonderful staff from the Varsity Lakes Surgical Short Stay team, adding their contribution to this growing display of community spirit across our hospitals.

Thank you to everyone who has embraced the program again this year - it’s been incredible to see the enthusiasm and care behind each poppy made. 💛

Lest we forget.

A new chapter is taking shape for adult mental health services at Southport Health Precinct (SHP). 🏥🧱 🧠

Level 5 of the precinct is being transformed to support people accessing adult mental health care, with new interview rooms, updated treatment spaces and improved work areas for clinical teams.

Mental Health and Specialist Services Clinical Director Dr Sandeep Chand said the project would enhance the experience for people accessing services at the precinct.

“Several adult mental health services are based at Southport Health Precinct and we are looking forward to providing their consumers, visitors and staff with refurbished and new environments,” Dr Chand said.

Project Manager Capital and Minor Works Duro Dragicevic said the project team was working closely with mental health service teams to shape the space.

“It’s exciting to see the project taking shape and I’m looking forward to the positive difference this refreshed space will make for staff and for people in our community who rely on these services,” Duro said.

These services are typically accessed through referral from a GP, hospital or other health professional, helping connect people with the support they need close to home.

Construction is expected to begin in quarter two of 2026.

🚨Do you know the signs of sepsis in babies and children? 🚨

⏰ Sepsis is a medical emergency. It can happen when the body is fighting an infection but starts to attack itself. It can be caused by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections and can become serious very quickly.

In children, sepsis can be hard to recognise because symptoms often look like common illnesses such as the flu or gastro. That’s why knowing the signs of sepsis is so important.

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs:
• A lot of pain or very restless
• Working hard to breathe
• Blotchy, blue or pale skin
• Drowsy or confused
• Floppy
• Cold skin
• Seizures
• Rash that doesn’t fade when pressed

⏰ You know your child best. If something feels different or they seem more unwell than ever before, trust your gut and ask your doctor or nurse: “Could it be sepsis?”

The sound of the flute has a deep connection to spirituality and healing that arguably goes back further than any other instrument in human history.

So, we were delighted to have professional flautist Teneille Douglas perform at Robina Hospital recently as part of our International Women’s Day exhibition.

“For me the flute is emotional, it brings out the happiness and the sadness," Teneille said.

"It has a large range and at times can get quite strenuous playing for hours at a time, but I love its different tonations.”

Teneille also gave a special performance in the calming Palliative Care garden courtyard playing a selection of well-known popular songs for patients, family and staff.

“I know that music is healing and I myself have been in hospital for extended amounts of time, so I know how much joy it can bring, not just to the patients but to the family.”

Ashley and Rachel have a few things in common.

They’re both from North Queensland, they’re both nurses and they’ve both spent a fortnight working in our mental health service as part of an innovative immersion program.

The Strength with Immersion Model (SwIM) program is designed to support early to mid-career nurses from across Queensland to develop skills in a specialty area, with 15 nurses and midwives to work under supervision in Mental Health and Specialist Services before the end of June.

And Rachel and Ashley were first cabs off the rank.

“I know my colleagues are looking forward to me bringing back ideas,” Rachel said of her Mental Health Hospital in the Home (MH HITH) team in Cairns.

“Seeing the Gold Coast MH HITH service fully operational and how they navigate a city of this size has been a great opportunity.”

“As a rural health service, we don’t see what happens after people have had a mental health assessment so being able to see the follow-up care they receive and the services provided on the Gold Coast has been eye-opening," Ashley, who calls Magnetic Island home, said.

The North Queenslanders also have another thing in common – their favourite thing about temporarily living on the Gold Coast.

“Going to the beach and not having to worry about crocodiles,” Rachel laughed. 🐊

From cash pay packets counted by hand to today’s complex systems, Jim McHugh has seen it all.

After more than 40 years in the health service, Jim is stepping into retirement, leaving behind a legacy of change, growth and quiet impact across Gold Coast Health.

Starting in payroll at Wolston Park Hospital, Jim witnessed firsthand the challenges of manual systems — where wages were once paid in cash 💵 before the shift to electronic transfers. 🖥️

Over the decades, he became a trusted and steady presence, supporting major milestones including the expansion of Robina Hospital and the opening of Gold Coast University Hospital.

“It’s hard to pick one career highlight but seeing the new opportunities has been very rewarding,” Jim said.

Thank you, Jim, for four decades of dedication and enjoy a well-earned retirement. 👏

Following the move of the Complex Management Unit to the new H Block at Gold Coast University Hospital, H2 East is now being refurbished – reimagining the ward to better support older adults and people experiencing cognitive impairment. 🏡

The refreshed ward will include 20 beds (10 Acute Cognitive beds and 10 Acute Geriatric beds), with a strong focus on comfort, familiarity and connection.

Gold Coast Health Nurse Unit Manager Tracey Miller said the refurbished ward will better support older adults and people experiencing cognitive impairment.

“This refit at Robina gives us the opportunity to create a space that feels calm, familiar and supportive for patients,” Tracey said.

“Thoughtful design elements such as clear wayfinding, access to natural light and comfortable, homelike spaces can help people feel more settled, maintain independence and stay connected during their care.”

From personalised bedrooms and quiet activity spaces to a revitalised garden terrace and nature-inspired artwork, the ward has been carefully designed to support wellbeing at every step. 🌿

Works are now underway, with H2 East Robina set to reopen mid-year.
