Walk with Purpose. Walk for MND.

On Monday 17th November 2025, the MLSP Speech Pathology team will be walking around beautiful Narrabeen Lake to support people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Right now, more than 500 people in NSW are living with MND — many needing intensive daily support. Together, we can help MND NSW continue their incredible work providing care, advocacy, and hope for people and families facing this tough journey.

A few weeks ago, our team had a fantastic session with LinkAT diving into the world of AAC and eye gaze technology. 💬👀

We explored how eye gaze systems can empower individuals with complex communication needs to express themselves more independently and effectively. A big thank you to Loren from LinkAT for the hands-on learning and valuable insights!

💬✨ 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮

Conversations can sometimes feel challenging, but small changes can make a big difference. Here are a few simple strategies:

👉 Speak slowly and clearly
👉 Use short, simple sentences
👉 Ask one question at a time
👉 Allow extra time for a response
👉 Use names and context to help with memory
👉 Offer reassurance with your tone, facial expression, and body language
👉 Validate what they say - if they think their kids are coming home from school, reassure them.
👉 Reminisce with them. Go through photo albums or mementos together
👉 Reduce any distractions in the background that might compete with your conversation

Remember — it’s not just about words. A warm smile, gentle touch, or shared activity can say just as much. 💜

This week we pause to raise awareness and stand with people living with dementia, their families, and carers. Communication is central to connection, but dementia can make expressing needs, thoughts, and feelings more challenging.

As speech pathologists, we work alongside people living with dementia to support:
✅ Maintaining meaningful conversations
✅ Provide strategies and tools for self-advocacy and express their well-being
✅ Supporting families and carers with practical communication strategies

Every small step can make a big difference in helping someone feel heard, valued, and understood.

No one can do it alone. Let’s continue the conversation to create a community where people living with dementia feel supported. 💜

Through our Mealtime Management Plan (MMP) training, we support teams and carers to understand swallowing recommendations in a way that’s clear, practical, and person-centred — both in-person and online.

🔸 We explain IDDSI levels in everyday language
🔸 We discuss dignity of risk and what quality of life looks like at mealtimes
🔸 We show how communication tools — visuals, supported decision-making, AAC — can help people be part of their own choices
🔸 We empower carers to support safe, enjoyable, and respectful mealtimes.

🍽️💬 Everyone has the right to be part of decisions about how they eat and drink — and how they live.

When someone has swallowing difficulties, clinical recommendations (like IDDSI texture levels) help keep them safe — but safety shouldn't come at the cost of silence.

As speech pathologists, we don’t just assess swallowing. We support people to:
✅ Understand their options in everyday terms
✅ Use tools like visuals, AAC or supported conversation to be part of mealtime decisions
✅ Weigh up dignity of risk and quality of life, not just clinical safety
Because true independence is more than just following a recommendation — it's understanding it, talking about it, and making choices that feel right for you.

💬 Everyone deserves a say.

When Harry experienced the loss of a loved one, he struggled to understand what was happening and how to express his feelings.

Together, we used social stories and visuals to help him make sense of death and grief in a way that felt safe and clear. 🌱

With these supports, he was able to talk about his emotions, support his loved ones, and find comfort in knowing his feelings were understood. ❤️
