Berry and Collective Psychology is a youth focused psychology practice on Sydney's Northern Beaches. We work with children, adolescents, young adults and their families to improve wellbeing and treat mental health conditions. We are a multidisciplinary group of passionate mental health professionals who aim to bring warmth, acceptance, and hope to our interactions with all clients. Our team of cli

nicians has combined experience of over 100 years, and expertise in evidence based practice including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Schema Therapy. We work with a range of personal and mental health issues including anxiety, depression, peer relationships, bullying, family separation and change, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. Treatment is planned around individual needs and goals, and we aim to empower our clients and enhance the strengths of the individual and their family. We welcome referrals from GPs under Mental Health Care Plans. This allows you to claim a rebate through Medicare which covers a large portion of the appointment cost. See your GP for a referral, or give us a all if you would like more information. We also accept the following referral types: Psychological Access Plus, NDIS, Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), Victims Services, WorkCover NSW, and NSW Motor Accidents Scheme.

Myth: “People with mental health conditions cannot handle a job.”

Fact: A supportive and safe workplace enables individuals with mental health struggles to feel supported, motivated and encouraged.

While mental health conditions can potentially impact some areas of work performance, they can also have no effect whatsoever. It all depends on the nature and symptoms of the condition, as well as the workplace, the individual, and the type of tasks involved.

Assuming that people with mental health issues won’t be able to handle a job is de-motivating and isolating. Instead, we can all empower each other to perform at our best, whatever our struggles may be.

Have you ever accidentally called your current partner by your ex-partner's name? You’ve just had a Freudian slip!

Named after Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, a Freudian slip is an unintentional error in memory, speech or action.

These slips are thought to expose hidden thoughts and feelings of our unconscious mind, so next time you have a slip, consider what it could be telling you!

Myth: “Children do not experience mental health issues.”

Fact: Children can experience mental health issues. In fact, research shows that 1 in 6 children meet the criteria for diagnosable developmental, mental or behavioural conditions. Mental health conditions are simply not ‘adult problems’.

If children are experiencing problems related to mental health, and if these problems are causing them distress or impacting their daily functioning, then they may benefit from support.

Support may include:

- Investigating a diagnosis with a cognitive assessment
- Engaging in therapy to help build their understanding of their thoughts and emotions, and to develop skills
- Parenting support so that parents can develop their own skills around helping their child
- Attending a group program
- Engaging in a mentor program
- Considering medication

A visit to your family GP is often a great place to start if you think your child may be experiencing difficulties related to mental health.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Myth: “You are either ‘normal’ or ‘mentally ill’.”

Fact: Wrong, it is not an ‘us versus them’ scenario as mental health exists on a continuum. Mental health conditions are common, and even those with stable mental well-being will experience high levels of distress at certain points in their life. Perhaps there is no ‘normal’?
