What are the excuses flooding your mind right now?
❄️"It's too cold!"
👨‍🦳"I'm too old!"
👎"It's not easy!"
😫"I'm too busy!"
You KNOW you need to move your body.
You KNOW you want to stress less.
I don't need to nag you. And I don't want to!
But, I would like to help motivate you, so..... this is a picture of me in a propped version of Savasana, the final resting pose in EVERY yoga class that I teach.
Now, imagine yourself in this same pose, after spending some time being mindful of how you breathe, and being carefully guided through body movements that are tailored to suit your needs and ability. Imagine that you were able to make choices throughout our session together so you gained confidence in what your body and mind were capable of, and you were with a small group of people who also felt how you felt.

Bringing back mobility and building strength is an important step on your road to recovery after a strain, sprain, break, surgery or other physical trauma/injury.

Join me on Sunday 17th March to learn the origins of yoga, the different forms and their yogic paths, and how Hatha Yoga, in particular, has been altered by modern society.
Created and curated for yoga novices - JUST LIKE YOU - who are curious, but have no idea where to start!
This 2-hour workshop is designed to gently step you through the fundamentals of yoga, as expressed through sage Patanjali's "Yoga Sutra" as the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
The program will include:

It's taking me some time to get my sh*t together, especially while feeling as though I'm pulled in many different directions.
I'm sure you can relate!
But, no matter how cruddy I feel, I am a rainbow unicorn after I lead or attend a yoga class - and I'd like you to feel the same way too!
This week we will explore the concept of "control", especially trying to release this word of positive or negative connotation.

This is the pile of tree debris that took out my veggie patch last week - it almost fills my back yard! (Big shout out to the SES crew.)
I was lucky. My youngest was unwell, so she was home from school, and my other daughter had just walked in the door when that insane storm hit.
So many people were caught out, though. The destruction was unbelievable. And the days of clean up, waiting for power, waiting for internet connection, throwing away spoiled food and dealing with the trauma of such a violent storm... The effects linger.
I wish to offer you yoga sessions this week where we will tread softly, move gently and take the time to soothe jangled nerves and pent up tension. Please join me! I'll offer you ways to connect with your self and your needs, and hold space while you do so.

Our yogic theme will be APARIGRAHA (non-grasping), and we'll be facilitating this with hip opening STRADDLE SEQUENCES across all classes, all week.
So much physical and emotional tension is stored in our hips, and we desperately try to counter this in our daily lives in many ways, attempting to ease the heaviness and pressure however we may.
I offer you the opportunity to carefully open up the hip girdle and release what you're storing by taking you through appropriate and adaptable breathwork practices, asana (pose) sequences, and by holding meditative space - with care and compassion - for you.

The first of my NEW workshop series this year is kicking off in under two weeks!
Held on the third Sunday of every month in the Yoga Room at Deshi-Do Martial Arts Centre, these two-hour workshops are intended to take you beyond a yoga class structure and deeply discover the different aspects of yoga, from history to philosophy, daily living habits and behaviours to the purpose behind yoga class structure and the (sometimes unintended) outcomes of asana practice.
February AND March workshops will follow the same format and shall focus upon understanding WHAT YOGA IS, the major forms, and why people are drawn to the practices.
You will have the opportunity to experience foundational breathing techniques, learn the base asanas from which all the fancy ones have evolved, and have a taste of guided relaxation and meditation.
These first two months of workshops are only $40pp.

Join me on Sunday 18th February to learn the origins of yoga, the different forms and the yogic path associated with them, and how Hatha Yoga, in particular, has been altered by modern society.
Our 2 hours together will include theory, reflection and discussion, beginner's breathwork exercises, and the opportunity to partake in a modifiable asana flow sequence that will finish with some restorative poses, then a guided meditation.

Where did January go?! With the kids back at school this week, give yourself an hour to move and breathe with me.
The unifying theme across all sessions will be
TWISTS & TURNS
Fantastic for spinal health, creating mobility through the joints and aiding the digestive system, twisting asanas add a layer of depth to common poses.
🔷🔹🔷
Pranayama (breathwork) practices this week will include Sama Vrtti ("Equal/Same" "Fluctuation") with and without Kumbhaka ("Breath Holds"). When these breath holds are the same length as the inhale and exhale, it becomes known as "Box", "Square", or "Seasonal" breathing.
This form of breathwork allows the practitioner to become aware of tensions, blockages and fears around the movement of the breath, and once a comfortable cadence is established, the mind moves with the breath in synchronicity. The results feel amazing!

Rather than talk you through each yoga sequence for my Gentle/Novice, Slow Flow, and Yin & Meditation classes, this week I'd like to highlight the unifying theme across all sessions:
ATTENTION to moving with INTENTION
Integral to maintaining your own safety throughout a movement practice, being intentional with how you execute a pose is also a challenge for the ego!
Paying attention to this gives us awareness of how we fluctuate within our spectrum of existence, with Performance at one end of this spectrum, and Pure Authenticity at the other.
Let's explore this concept with curiosity, noticing moments when we may be pushing too far, and others when fluidity and grace seem effortless.

BALANCE POSES
(Gentle/Novice & Mindful Movement classes)

Balance is critical to maintain. We all know the ramifications of muscle loss (sarcopenia) and the risks of falling. Strength training is key - pushing and pulling against weight that is greater than what you're used to - and your own body weight can be just that! We will test out several core and balancing poses, using our bodies, the floor, and the wall to get us into position so we can explore sensation and mobility safely.

CORE FLEX & STRENGTH
(Slow Flow - Intermediate Level)

A decent warm up and reminder to engage lower body bandhas will assist you in this class of mini-flow upon mini-flow. Moving with intention and control will not only have you get the most out of this core-strengthening sequence, but will have you celebrating your wins with balance, too!

Are you in need of a little support? Sometimes, we need to turn to strength and solidarity from outside sources to hold us up so we are allowed time to explore our inner selves. IT'S ALL IN THE HIPS
How flexible have you been over the summer holiday break? Emotional tension and the stress of running around like a headless chook in the lead up to Christams, going back to work, or setting kids up for the new school year will have built up in your body if you haven't had the chance to intentionally clear it out.
So, this week, we will be working on those hips. Yes, for EVERY yang-style class - Gentle/Novice, Slow Flow AND Mindful Movement!
The hip girdle is not only a major load-bearing part of the body. This area is also prone to deferred pain, sciatica, postural misalignment and pent up emotion. Let's open up with care.

RELEASE RESISTANCE
Are you resisting having to implement your usual routines? Perhaps you're feeling the build up of tension in your body and your mind, but you're not ready for an active yoga class?
The Yin & Meditation sequence I have planned for this week will allow you to open your hips sloooooooowly as we hold each pose for several minutes in stillness. Feel yourself gradually relax into position, with props to keep you in alignment and supported according to your particular needs.
This hip sequence is interspersed with spinal twists so that you can feel the effects along the whole length of the spine, releasing tension and resistance along the way.
