IT’S SIMPLE‼️ Speechies diagnosing dyslexia - not controversial, just logic.

This is one of the most common questions I get from parents and professionals. 👩‍🏫

Dyslexia is strongly linked to difficulties with phonological processing:
👉 How speech sounds are identified, stored, and connected to reading and spelling.
That’s a core area of expertise for speech pathologists.

While dyslexia has historically been diagnosed by psychologists, speech pathologists are highly trained in the speech-sound-literacy connection and are well placed to assess and diagnose dyslexia.

I wrote a blog post breaking this down in detail and years later, it’s still one of my most read because this question comes up constantly.

If you want clarity around:

“MYTH: Only psychologists can diagnose dyslexia”❌
“FACT: Dyslexia is defined as a language-based learning disability”✅

“Speech pathologists assess language.
Daily.”
“So why does this still feel controversial?”

“The real issue isn’t who diagnoses, it’s how well it’s done.”

If you work in schools or support dyslexic students, this conversation matters.👩‍🏫

Speech & Language Milestones Matter 🔊

Knowing what’s typical can help parents identify when extra support may be helpful.

📌Key facts:
• By 12 months, most children use gestures and say 1-2 words
• By 2 years, children typically use 50+ words and start combining them
• By 3 years, speech should be understood by unfamiliar listeners most of the time

Speech Pathology Australia states that speech pathologists who specialise in literacy are increasingly making the diagnosis of dyslexia.

So the real question isn’t ‘Can they?

“It’s Why are we still pretending this is radical?”

MYTH‼️ “Dyslexia can’t be diagnosed until the age of 8.”

You DO NOT need to wait until the age of 8 to test for dyslexia, it can show up in early language development and can be diagnosed at a young age!

There’s nothing worse than hearing your child call themself “dumb” or “stupid”.

I’ve spent nearly 30 years working with bright, capable kids who still think they’re “dumb” because reading feels impossible.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “I’m just not good at school.”
But they’re not the problem. The system is.

I do this work because I’ve seen too many children left behind. Misunderstood. Unsupported. And I know many of you, parents, teachers, fellow speechies feel that same frustration.
That’s why I’m So Passionate About Supporting Kids with Dyslexia
It’s not just about reading. It’s about confidence, belonging, and changing the story these kids are told about themselves.

If you’ve ever watched a child lose faith in their abilities... this is for you.

📌Remember: Your child’s mental health is just as important as their academic progress.
Providing emotional support, encouragement, and the right accommodations will help them thrive.

Balancing School & Well-Being ☺️
✅Prioritize activities they enjoy (sports, music, hobbies)
alongside schoolwork.
✅Limit excessive homework that interferes with play, relaxation, or social time.
✅Recognize progress, not
perfection - Celebrate effort over outcomes.

Encouraging Independence & Success 😄
✅Help them set small, achievable goals.
✅Reward persistence and effort, not just results.
✅Encourage problem-solving and finding workarounds (e.g., using audiobooks, speech-to-text tools).
✅Make sure they have time to relax and recharge - downtime is essential.
