Staying healthy during the Silly Season

Christmas time is a hectic time. We frantically try to get everything done, which can cause irritability - with our partner, kids, workmates, and friends - and that often means shame and extra work to mend relationships. This can cause additional stress and tension when all you need is a break!

It is of the utmost importance to look after our physical and mental wellbeing during times of stress. Here are some tips on how to look after yourself during the busiest month of the year:

1) Keep exercising! This is the best protector of mental and physical health.
2) Drink alcohol in moderation. Alcohol increases our reactivity and irritability and can fracture important relationships. Intersperse alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic, set a limit, and have alcohol-free days.
3) Take a time-out if you can. Having some alone time to recharge your social battery is important to decrease stress and irritability.
4) When catching up with difficult family members, keep the topic of conversation non-controversial and simple. Being sober can help stay mindful of what is happening, and avoid emotional minefields.
5) Ensure you get enough quality sleep. Again, alcohol does not help with this. Sleep helps us manage our emotions, so make sure you get enough of it this time of the year.

We hope these tips will help you enjoy the Silly Season.
