Pratyahara is the 5th step on Patanjali's 8-Fold Path of Yoga. It's where our practice turns from being external, to focussing internally. Our minds are usually preoccupied with the things coming through our senses - the material world - and this can disrupt our state of mind. While we do need our senses to know what's going on around us, consciously disengaging from this calms our mind and leads to self awareness, "enabling a recognition of an enriching presence and a sense of wealth within - not merely within ourselves but also within all phenomena and the natural world. Our mind becomes still, a deep, internal stillness and from there we can develop the powers of concentration and meditation." Shanti Gowans

Pranayama is the fourth step on Patanjali's 8-fold Path of Yoga. The breathing practices help control the movement of prana, life force, vital energy. Yoga views prana as flowing through the universe and the human body, and explains how we can harness it. This energy flow is rarely used effectively by most people. The Pranayama practices harmonise the mind-body with the flow of the universe so we can act in harmony with it rather than against it. In our classes Pranayama is integrated with the asana practice. When we flow with this breath energy, we are able to add universal energy to our own physical energy. At this point it's not the ego centred mind that moves the body but rather it is moved by the universal power of prana.

The third step on Patanjali's 8-fold Path of Yoga is the Asanas, the postures. Asana means seat, and asanas help the attainment of steadiness and stillness. The postures not only calm and centre the mind, you become stronger, more supple, more coordinated and more aware of your body and how it works. You can start to replace old habits with healthier new ones. The postures energise you rather than tire you and you become more in touch with energies and how you breathe. When asanas are well performed, pranayamic breathing automatically sets in. There is no hierarchy in the posture work, one asana well performed conveys the entire meaning of Yoga and the real oneness of creation. One life pulsates in every body. Consciousness projects itself and Spirit flows through matter, matter through Spirit. Shanti Gowans

The Niyamas are the second step on Patanjali's 8 Fold Path of Yoga. Once we've understood and are observing the Yamas, the abstinences and Universal moral codes, we move to the 5 Niyamas, observances and personal virtues, that are disciplined guidelines for us with ourselves. They calm a disturbed mind.
1. Purity/Cleanliness - of behaviour and habits. Cleanliness of person and surroundings and internally eradicating passion, anger, greed, infatuation, pride and malice and envy by occupying the mind with good constructive thoughts.
2. Contentment. Reducing our wants makes us cheerful and gives balance of mind.
3. Discipline. Perseverance and diligence enable us to discipline the body and to endure challenges and adversity, directing the mind inwards.
4. Self education. Study of the teachings and self education by seeking truth and self realisation.
5. Faith in Cosmic Power. Surrendering to a higher power, to the divine.

Many people know yoga as being just the asanas, the postures. However yoga is a wholistic and complete path to self-realisation. It's a spiritual practice. And for thousands of years the seers and sages who spent their lives in practice in the caves and forrests in India passed their knowledge down to their students verbally. Patanjali who lived around 300 BC was the first person to encapsulate the disciplines and write them down - The 8 Fold Path of Yoga to self realisation. The first step on the 8 Fold path is the Yamas, 5 abstinences, guidelines for inter-personal relationships. We bring our relationship with the outside world into balance.
1. Non-Violence. We withdraw from harming anyone or anything, in thought, word or deed. When hatred and animosity are gone, all embracing love remains.
2. Non-Lying. Not just refraining from lying to others, but being truthful and honest with ourselves.
3. Non-Stealing. Respecting peoples possessions and ideas, not wanting more than we need.
4. Non-Misuse of Sexual Energy. Restraint is practised and brings the ability to see divinity in all forms.
5. Non-Greed. Not wanting things that are not necessary to maintain life. Excessive desire for things leads to attachment and unhappiness.
Shanti Gowans

Change! If you look at the changes in your life, if you have the eyes and awareness to see this, hasn't the change given you something, not left you with a lack? I feel change keeps us on track. It can be beautiful the way something else comes in effortlessly if you allow it, when something else has gone. It brings a deeper connection with life.
