We've been talking in classes recently about how people treat themselves. People are used to being stressed, tired, wound up to the point it seems "normal". What is the inner dialogue that keeps us living like this - to lose our humour, to struggle against ourselves, to dislike ourselves so much, to be so cut off from our feelings? We treat ourselves quite badly. It affects our health of course, our state of mind and our whole outlook on life. We need to just stop, and recognize how we're living and have the awareness to see how it's affecting us, then we can start to let the causes go and respond to life's challenges differently. Self-kindness and self-love aren't weaknesses, and it's not about ego. When we start to live more authentically we live in a state of wholeness and harmony free of fears and struggles. It means connecting with Ourselves and letting go opinions, criticisms and trying to live up to the way 21st century living says we should live. Brene Brown said "Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love." When we do live authentically we align with something greater in our lives, and it brings peace, self-love and self-acceptance. And I think that's what people are looking for.

Shavasana, Co**se Pose. This restorative posture is used for deep relaxation, or just resting between postures. It's a position that expresses openness, surrender and allowing. Tension is released from muscles, and from our mind. Our nervous system changes from fight-or-flight back to deep relaxation and in that state of relaxation, when our mind is quiet, we drop all effort to achieve anything and just rest in the present moment. Our energy levels are higher when we're relaxed too. Our mind loses interest in judging things to be right or wrong, good or bad etc. and in this stillness we can access a very creative, deeper consciousness, which is in all of us.

Samadhi. Self realisation, unity, oneness, harmony and connection to all life. The 8th and final step on Patanjali's 8-Fold Path. The mind is unshaken by dual experience. Freed from all duality - us and them, for and against etc. - form is ignored and meaning alone is felt. It is not blankness or darkness of mind. The mind freed from all impulses and agitations is fixed on one's own Reality, the God-Self. Meditator, the process of meditation and the object meditated on lose their individual qualities. A profound state of silence arises together with the experience of freedom and bliss. So before exploring the unknown self, we must learn about our body, mind, intellect and ego. The early stages lay the foundations and shouldn't be ignored or neglected. From Shanti Gowans

Dhyana, Meditation. The 7th limb of Patanjali's 8-fold Path. When our mind is quite still, undistracted, resting in an uninterrupted focus and flow, there is a blurring of the line between subject and object, which gives rise to a profound state of awareness. Attention can be turned to who we authentically are without all our labels, conditioning and everything we use to define ourselves.

Dharana, Concentration, the 6th step of Patanjali's 8-Fold Path. After our mind has been turned inwards through withdrawing from the senses, it starts to become focused, concentrated, and more powerful. We train our mind to be focused and unwavering on an object, eg. the breath, and with practice it becomes one-pointed. Body breath, mind, all aspects are merged into a single state of being.

Pratyahara is the 5th step on Patanjali's 8-Fold Path of Yoga. It's where our practice turns from being external, to focussing internally. Our minds are usually preoccupied with the things coming through our senses - the material world - and this can disrupt our state of mind. While we do need our senses to know what's going on around us, consciously disengaging from this calms our mind and leads to self awareness, "enabling a recognition of an enriching presence and a sense of wealth within - not merely within ourselves but also within all phenomena and the natural world. Our mind becomes still, a deep, internal stillness and from there we can develop the powers of concentration and meditation." Shanti Gowans

Change! If you look at the changes in your life, if you have the eyes and awareness to see this, hasn't the change given you something, not left you with a lack? I feel change keeps us on track. It can be beautiful the way something else comes in effortlessly if you allow it, when something else has gone. It brings a deeper connection with life.
