Here are some specific tips to help veterans stay connected:
• Reach Out to Old Friends: Whether it’s an old serving member or a neighbour, take the first step. For example, reach out on social media or send a quick text to catch up over coffee.
• Join a Local Veterans’ Group: Look for community groups or veteran organisations in your area, such as RSL clubs. For instance, attending a veterans’ breakfast or participating in social outings can help you connect with others who understand your experiences.
• Make Time for Family: Schedule weekly video calls or a family dinner. For example, you could plan a Sunday BBQ to spend time with loved ones and share what’s been happening in each other’s lives.
• Participate in Community Events: Get involved in local events, like Veterans’ Health Week activities at your local RSL or community centre.
• Seek Peer Support: Reach out to groups like Open Arms for peer support from others who understand your experience (Open Arms: 24/7 support- Phone: 1800 011 046)
• Get Involved with Hobbies: Pursue activities you love- whether it’s gardening, sports, or creative arts- to connect with others who share your interests.
If you require any support, or know someone who might, please reach out today. We’re here to help 💙
