Speech Pathology Week - Independence through communication: Our clinicians discussed how vitally important communication.

Communication is very important for building independence because:

Everyone deserves to be able to express their wants and needs independently
Being able to express yourself is a basic human need
It allows for collaborative goal setting
We find out what is important to our families
It allows autonomy and choice and control
It promotes the development of life skill and participation in the world
It helps to keep yourself safe.

Speech Pathology Week: Wellbeing Through Communication

- Communication is an exchange between 2 or more people to share and understand thoughts, feelings and opinions. Through effective communication people have the autonomy to express their feelings and emotions in a variety of settings to support their wellbeing.
- Well-being is promoted through communication. People are supported through expressing their feelings, needs and wants using verbal and non-verbal communication such as AAC, KWS, gestures, eye gaze, body language, facial expressions
- Communication allows the listener to understand how someone is feeling. It’s one thing to communicate and another to be heard.

"I want more"
"Can you say it again"
"Stop, I don’t like it."
"I like this"
"I am happy"
"I am enjoying this"
"This makes me angry"
